Superman Set to Soar Past Key Box Office Milestone This Weekend
It looks like Superman is still flying high at the box office. The movie has already made $426.3 million worldwide, with $253.2 million coming from the U.S. and Canada, and $173.1 million from international markets, according to the latest numbers as of July 22, 2025.
And it’s not done yet. The film is expected to pass $500 million worldwide this weekend. That’s a big milestone because, according to reports, it needed to make over $500 million just to break even. But to actually be considered a box office hit, it would need to get closer to $700 million.
Before it even hit theaters, there was a lot of excitement. When the first full trailer dropped, it was said the movie had the potential to earn more than $1 billion globally. But with production and marketing costs reportedly around $400 million, people knew it had a long way to go.

There were big guesses about how much it would make in its opening weekend. Some thought it could open with $175 million in North America, which would’ve beaten the $166 million debut of Batman v Superman. But Warner Bros. played it safer, predicting an opening between $90 million and $125 million. In the end, the movie made $125 million domestically in its first weekend, landing just above expectations and setting a record for the biggest opening for a solo Superman movie.
The buzz before release was strong too. On July 10, Deadline Hollywood reported that it earned $2.8 million just from Tuesday previews. Add in Thursday night and special Amazon Prime showings, and the number jumped to $22.5 million. That gave it the best preview earnings of any movie in 2025 so far, and the biggest for a James Gunn film. It even beat the numbers Barbie made in previews.
On its first full day in theaters, Superman pulled in $56.5 million, making it the second-biggest opening day of the year, just behind A Minecraft Movie. In international markets, it earned $95 million over opening weekend, pushing its worldwide total to $220 million at that point. Some of the top-performing countries were the UK, Mexico, and Brazil. But in places like China, it didn’t do as well, it opened in fourth place there.
Even with a few rough spots overseas, the movie held up well in its second weekend. It brought in $57 million in North America and stayed at number one. The 54% drop was seen as a good sign compared to other superhero films this year. Captain America: Brave New World dropped by 68%, and Thunderbolts fell by 56%.
Reviews have been mostly good. Rotten Tomatoes says 84% of critics liked it. The site’s summary says, “Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion’s big, beating heart front and center, this Superman flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.” Metacritic gave it a score of 68 out of 100, which means most critics had positive things to say.
So far, Superman hasn’t completely blown the doors off the box office, but it’s staying strong and steady. It still has a chance to reach the success mark if it keeps going at this pace. One thing’s for sure, this version of Superman isn’t crashing anytime soon.
