‘Superman’ Star Nicholas Hoult Joins HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series as a Character Fans Will Love to Hate

HBO’s ambitious ‘Harry Potter’ adaptation has been steadily assembling one of the most closely watched casts in television, dedicating each season to a single book from J.K. Rowling’s beloved series. With Season 1’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” set to premiere on December 25 and the show already renewed for a second season adapting “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” fans have spent months speculating about which actors might join the sprawling wizarding world.

That speculation reached a fever pitch given how memorable certain “Chamber of Secrets” characters became through the original 2002 film adaptation, particularly the theatrical, self-obsessed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor whose reputation for heroism far outpaced his actual magical ability. Filling that role again would require an actor capable of matching a genuinely iconic comedic performance.

Deadline has now confirmed exactly who’s taking on that challenge, revealing that Nicholas Hoult has joined Season 2 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series as Gilderoy Lockhart. The role was previously played by Kenneth Branagh in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” and Hoult’s casting gives the celebrated author and self-proclaimed wizarding hero a fresh interpretation for the small screen.

According to Deadline, Lockhart is described as a notoriously vain, boastful, and fame-obsessed wizard well-versed in memory charms, recruited by Dumbledore to teach at Hogwarts despite his questionable qualifications for the job. As the story unfolds in “Chamber of Secrets,” it quickly becomes evident that his celebrated exploits owe far more to embellishment and outright deception than genuine heroism.

Hoult’s casting carries an especially fitting layer of history given his own connection to the franchise decades earlier. As a child, he actually auditioned to play Harry Potter himself, ultimately losing the role to Daniel Radcliffe before the original film series ever began. More than two decades later, Hoult is finally getting his own invitation into the wizarding world, this time as one of its most memorably self-absorbed supporting characters.

That casting also plays directly into the comedic strengths Hoult has demonstrated throughout his career, particularly in projects like “The Great” and “The Menu,” where he’s leaned into arrogance and dark humor with considerable success. Given Lockhart’s signature blend of theatrical charm and utter incompetence, Hoult’s track record with morally slippery, self-important characters positions him well for the role.

Hoult joins a returning core cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, alongside established names like John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. However, not every actor from Season 1 is expected to return, with Gracie Cochrane’s family confirming she’s stepping away from her role as Ginny Weasley following unforeseen circumstances.

Production on Season 2 is scheduled to begin this fall, with writer Jon Brown elevated to co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner for the upcoming season. With Season 1 still months away from its Christmas debut and Season 2 already actively taking shape behind the scenes, HBO’s methodical, book-by-book approach to the franchise continues building anticipation well ahead of each new chapter’s premiere.
