Sydney Sweeney Breaks Her Silence on Whether She’ll Ever Talk Politics
Sydney Sweeney recently appeared in a Cosmopolitan photoshoot to introduce SYRN, a direct-to-consumer underwear line she helped design. The brand focuses on size range and choice, and Sweeney says the project gives her creative control in an industry where that is rare. Speaking to Cosmopolitan, she framed the shoot as a form of expression. This can be how I communicate to my audience, she said. I want to show women that we can take back our power and fully free ourselves.
Still, the response online was split. Some people praised her for building a business and owning her image. Others questioned the message and timing. As has often been the case with Sweeney, the conversation quickly moved away from the product itself.
Much of the scrutiny ties back to last year. In 2025, Sweeney became a major topic during the backlash over her American Eagle ad campaign. The slogan Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans was meant to be playful, but critics said the visuals and wording carried uncomfortable undertones. Supporters disagreed and said the criticism was overblown. The debate turned a clothing ad into a political argument, and Sweeney’s refusal to comment only fueled more speculation.
That tension followed her into the launch of SYRN. The brand, which includes backing from high-profile investors like Jeff Bezos, made headlines again after a promotional stunt involving bras being hung near the Hollywood sign. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce later said the stunt was not approved, sparking legal and public backlash. Despite that, SYRN officially launched on January 27, offering 44 sizes and branding itself around empowerment.
Throughout all of this, Sweeney has been clear about one thing. She does not want to be involved in politics. In her Cosmopolitan interview, she shut down that idea directly. No. I’m not a political person. I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics. She added that she wants people to focus less on division. I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.
Her career, meanwhile, continues to move forward. Her thriller The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig, became the biggest box office success of her career, earning more than $300 million worldwide. Not every project has hit the same level. Her boxing biopic Christy struggled at the box office. Even so, she already has a busy year ahead, including a sequel to The Housemaid and a live-action Gundam film for Netflix.
Sydney Sweeney is choosing to stay visible while staying quiet on politics. She is building brands, starring in major films, and letting audiences decide what her actions mean. She has said she cannot control how people interpret her work, only what she puts out into the world.
Sweeney is trying to draw a clear line between her work and political identity, even if the internet refuses to respect that boundary. In today’s climate, silence often gets treated as a statement, whether that’s fair or not. What do you think about her decision to keep her political views private?
