Few thrillers have come out of nowhere quite like ‘The Housemaid’. A modest-budget adaptation of a bestselling novel turned into one of the biggest surprise hits of 2025, and Hollywood didn’t wait long to ask for more. Now the sequel is firmly in motion, and the latest set photos show Sydney Sweeney back in character in New York.

The first film opened in December 2025 to $19 million and went on to gross roughly $400 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It also became Sweeney’s highest-grossing starring vehicle, overtaking ‘Anyone But You’. Lionsgate announced a sequel just 17 days after the original’s release.

The newest photos show Sweeney filming in Manhattan on October 28, wearing a tan workwear jacket and extra-wide blue jeans with dark boots. They mark the point where production has moved into New York proper after weeks of shooting across New Jersey. Filming is set across New York City and New Jersey this fall.

The setting fits the story. In the sequel, Millie goes to Manhattan to work for a wealthy family, and the new locations are meant to bring that world to life.

The sequel, ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’, officially began production in October, with Lionsgate announcing it using a short clip that featured a Lionsgate Stage 1 sign. Sweeney was reportedly seen shooting on October 6 at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Then crews set up on Garden Street in Hoboken on October 14, where she filmed with Michele Morrone.

More sightings followed. Sweeney was photographed with Stephen Kalyn in Hoboken, wearing a black floral dress with a white cardigan, and she was spotted with Kirsten Dunst in Jersey City on October 26. A day later she was seen in a floral dress walking down stairs outside during another New Jersey scene.

Sweeney returns as Millie Calloway, and Morrone is back as Enzo. Dunst and Paul Anthony Kelly play the Garricks, the wealthy couple Millie works for this time around. Brittany Snow has also been spotted on set, and ‘Off Campus’ star Stephen Kalyn is part of the filming.

Amanda Seyfried hasn’t been announced for the sequel, though she has said she could see herself making a brief appearance. Brandon Sklenar’s character meets a fatal end in the first film, so he isn’t expected back.

‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ adapts the second book in Freida McFadden’s trilogy. The logline has Millie taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see, only to discover the truth behind a locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.

Paul Feig is back to direct, working from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book. Sweeney is also producing through Fifty-Fifty Films, alongside Feig and Laura Fischer for Pretty Dangerous Pictures and Todd Lieberman for Hidden Pictures. McFadden serves as an executive producer.

The film is set for release on December 17, 2027, exactly two years after the original. That puts it up against ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ on the same day. Lionsgate is again positioning the R-rated thriller as counter-programming during the busy Christmas corridor, aiming at audiences who want something more adult than superhero spectacle.

It’s a bold move, but the first film proved there is an audience for it. ‘The Housemaid’ held its own against ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and kept drawing crowds well beyond its opening weekend.

Lionsgate has said it hopes to turn ‘The Housemaid’ into a major film franchise. The studio has plans to adapt more of McFadden’s work, including the third novel, ‘The Housemaid Is Watching’, in the years ahead.

That makes this sequel a test of whether the series can sustain itself. With the same director, writer and star back and a growing cast, the creative team behind the original is largely intact, which is a promising sign.

Set photos have become a fun part of the build-up. Every sighting gives fans a little more insight into the sequel’s tone and where Millie’s story is headed, especially with a locked door at the center of the plot. For a thriller built on secrets, the guessing game is half the fun.

With production continuing across New York and New Jersey, more photos are likely before filming wraps. Until then, the Manhattan shots are a good reminder of how quickly this franchise has taken off.

How excited are you for the sequel?
