Sydney Sweeney’s Massive Transformation Unveiled in First Look at ‘Christy’ Biopic
Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the boxing ring to play Christy Martin, one of the biggest female sports stars of the 1990s. The upcoming film, titled Christy, tells the true story of Martin’s rise to fame as a professional boxer and also covers a dark moment when her husband tried to kill her in 2010.
Fans recently got a first look at Sweeney in character, and the photos reveal a striking transformation.
She looks strong and tough, perfectly fitting for the role of the boxing legend. The film is directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes. Christy Martin herself is involved in the project to ensure the story stays true to real events, according to sources close to the production.

Interestingly, Sydney faced criticism from some online fans while she was training for the role. People called her “overweight” and “not attractive,” but she shut down the negativity by sharing videos of her intense workouts.
Sweeney showed everyone she was in peak shape and ready for the challenge. About her preparations, she said, “I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body. Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”
The cast also includes Ben Foster as Christy’s husband James V. Martin, Merritt Wever as Joyce Salters, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman. Filming began in North Carolina in late September 2024 and wrapped up by mid-November.
Several production companies are behind the movie, including Anonymous Content and Black Bear Pictures, and Sydney Sweeney is also a producer on the film. Industry insiders say the movie will premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival in September.
