Syfy’s Hit Show with 98% Rotten Tomatoes Score Canceled After Four Seasons
The popular sci-fi comedy series Resident Alien has been canceled after four seasons, according TV Line. The news came just before the show’s final episode, which was scheduled to air on August 8.
The series stars Alan Tudyk as Harry, an alien who crash-lands on Earth and takes on the identity of a small-town doctor in Colorado.
Resident Alien switched networks for its fourth season, moving from Syfy to USA Network in hopes of reaching a bigger audience.
The show also gained some new viewers when the first three seasons became available for streaming on Netflix last summer. Series creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan told TV Line that he expected this to be the last season.
“Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending,” Sheridan said. “I’m so proud of how good Season 4 is and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favorite episode of the series.”
Resident Alien tells the story of an alien who arrives in a quiet Colorado town after crashing on Earth. He kills the real Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle and takes over his identity. While trying to blend into human society, the alien struggles with his mission to destroy humanity but starts to develop feelings and compassion for people.
Along the way, he has to deal with the mayor’s young son, who can see his true alien form. The show mixes humor with sci-fi and explores what it means to be human.
The main cast includes Alan Tudyk as Harry, Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, Corey Reynolds as Sheriff Mike Thompson, Alice Wetterlund as D’arcy Bloom, Levi Fiehler as Mayor Ben Hawthorne, Judah Prehn as Max Hawthorne, Elizabeth Bowen as Deputy Olivia Baker, and Meredith Garretson as Kate Hawthorne. Each character adds depth to the story as Harry navigates his unusual new life.
Resident Alien received praise for its unique blend of comedy and sci-fi, as well as Alan Tudyk’s performance as the awkward but endearing alien trying to fit in with humans. Fans will have to say goodbye to this quirky show after four seasons, but Sheridan’s words give hope that the series ended on a high note.
