The ‘Blair Witch’ franchise began with ‘The Blair Witch Project’ (1999), a found-footage horror film created by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, who conceived the fictional legend in 1993. Shot in 8 days on a tiny budget, it premiered at Sundance and grossed $248.6 million, helped by a groundbreaking viral marketing campaign that convinced many people the story was real. The franchise later expanded with the sequel ‘Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2’ (2000), Adam Wingard’s ‘Blair Witch’ (2016) and tie-ins such as TV specials like ‘Curse of the Blair Witch’, books, comics and the 2020 game ‘Hunt a Killer: Blair Witch’. It’s now owned by Lionsgate Studios, and a new version from YouTube-born filmmaker Dylan Clark is set for release in September 2027.
