The Liberation (Film)
‘The Liberation’ is a psychological cult drama from writer-director Guy Nattiv, inspired by his Holocaust-survivor grandmother, in which Rita (Carrie Coon), a woman in midlife haunted by her past, leaves her family to follow a magnetic young spiritual leader (Lily James) to an all-female commune in 1980s America. When her daughters, played by Bella Ramsey and Odessa Young, arrive to bring her home, they are drawn into the group’s world too, forcing Rita to choose between the family she left behind and the life she believes can save her. After premiering at Telluride and playing Toronto and London, it has earned awards buzz for Coon’s performance, with a short Oscar-qualifying run starting this week and a wider release on January 8.
