Taron Egerton recently opened up about the possibility of a sequel to his hit 2024 thriller Carry-On, and it sounds like fans might not want to get their hopes up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Egerton explained that making Carry-On 2 would be tricky without losing the magic of the original. “Carry-On 2 is really hard. It’s a celebration of Christmas and a celebration of people who work at Christmas. It then needs to have this huge plot that needs to be foiled and maybe the earwig component. All of that is quite hard to achieve in a sequel without it feeling contrived and to the point of defying credulity. So I have not heard anything, but who knows, stranger things have happened,” he said.

The actor, who played TSA agent Ethan Kopek, seems skeptical but didn’t completely shut the door on the idea. Carry-On, released on Netflix on December 13, 2024, is an action-packed thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman. The story follows Ethan, a young TSA officer working on Christmas Eve, who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler, played by Jason Bateman, into letting a dangerous nerve agent onto a flight carrying 250 passengers.

The film also stars Sofia Carson as Nora Parisi, Danielle Deadwyler as Elena Cole, and a solid supporting cast including Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, Theo Rossi, Logan Marshall-Green, and Dean Norris. Produced by DreamWorks Pictures and released under Amblin Entertainment, the movie was a massive hit.The film racked up an impressive 97 million views in its first ten days, according to Netflix data reported.

By January 2025, it climbed to 149.5 million views, making it the fifth-most-watched English-language film ever on the platform and the second-most-watched Netflix movie overall. Critics also gave it a thumbs-up, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting an 88% approval rating based on 104 reviews, averaging a 6.8/10 score.

The site’s consensus praised the chemistry between Egerton and Bateman, calling it “a throwback thriller that clears all checkpoints of plot logic with its confident execution.” Metacritic echoed the positive vibe, giving it a 69/100 based on 25 reviews, signaling generally favorable feedback.

The movie’s success comes from its tense plot and holiday setting, which Egerton noted celebrates Christmas and the workers who keep things running during the season. The high-stakes story, involving a nerve agent and a blackmail scheme, hooked viewers, but Egerton worries a sequel might feel forced.

With no official word on Carry-On 2, fans are left wondering if the team can find a fresh way to bring Ethan back to the airport. For now, the original remains a streaming juggernaut, proving its place as a modern thriller classic that resonates with audiences long after the credits roll.

The interview was conducted by The Hollywood Reporter.
