Taylor Swift Surprises Dakota Johnson on ‘SNL’ With a Pointed Correction
Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson have spent the past few weeks making their friendship very public. Johnson attended Swift and Travis Kelce’s July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden, and six days before ‘Saturday Night Live,’ she presented Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award at the MTV VMAs.
That same night, Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video premiered. Swift wrote and directed the dark Gothic video, and Johnson co-stars with Colin Farrell as a wealthy couple whose marriage is unraveling, with Swift appearing as a spectral figure.
So when Johnson took the stage on Saturday as host of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ fans were already speculating. It was Johnson’s third turn hosting, following appearances in February 2015 and January 2024, and Turnstile made their debut as musical guest. The night also fell on the eve of Johnson’s birthday.
Predictions of a cameo came true. A clip has gone viral on X showing Taylor Swift’s surprise ‘SNL’ cameo during Johnson’s opening monologue, an appearance that capped off a very big week for both stars.

Johnson began with jokes about her career and her love life. She poked fun at her 2024 superhero movie ‘Madame Web,’ joking that she is still promoting it because it hasn’t made any money. She then joked about two very public breakups with musicians since her last hosting gig, referring to Chris Martin and Role Model, and said she was looking for a third.
She also teased her new thriller ‘Verity,’ which stars her opposite Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, joking about kissing Hathaway in the film. ‘Verity’ reportedly opened with a solid $33 million-plus start this weekend, so Johnson had plenty to promote.
After Johnson said her friends are supportive and don’t judge her for dating these men, she introduced Swift as her therapist. Swift immediately pushed back, saying Johnson just shows up once a week at her house with an empty bottle of wine.
Swift added that Johnson flops on her couch and overshares, and that all she does is respond with a version of “that’s crazy.” Johnson then asked whether that counts as therapy, and the two joked that the evening ends with a sleepover. Swift said the visit actually ends with a Pedialyte and a ride home from her security team, and she squealed that it was Johnson’s birthday.
The monologue also included a wink at Swift’s husband. Johnson joked she was doing a public service by dating musicians and saving women money on Zoloft, then listed England, parts of Ireland and Cleveland among the places affected, which drew a quick “Woo-woo!” from Swift. The Cleveland line is a nod to Kelce’s Cleveland-area roots.
The cameo is Swift’s first onscreen ‘SNL’ appearance since October 2023, when she introduced Ice Spice as the musical guest. She hosted the show in 2009 and has appeared as a musical guest multiple times. She also popped up in a monologue in 2014 and a ‘Californians’ sketch in 2015.
Johnson has her own Swift history with the show. In her January 2024 monologue, she showed a photo from the show’s 40th anniversary special, and the camera zoomed in on Swift.
The monologue follows a string of high-profile moments. Swift also hinted at an ‘SNL’ appearance weeks earlier when she joined Mariska Hargitay in a pretaped ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ parody at the Emmys.
Her music has been making headlines too. ‘Patient Zero’ is the single from ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,’ and it broke a Spotify record following its surprise release. With the VMAs, the video and now ‘SNL,’ the Swift and Johnson team-up has been hard to miss.
It’s the sort of cameo that works because the friendship is real, and the audience reaction made that clear.
