A new teaser for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic has been released, giving fans their first glimpse of the film that explores the life of the King of Pop. The movie, titled Michael, stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, making his film debut as the legendary singer.

The biopic is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan. It covers Michael Jackson’s career from his time with the Jackson 5 to his early solo years. The cast also includes Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, Miles Teller as John Branca, and several other notable actors including Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, and Derek Luke.

Dr. King, the producer, said the film aims to “humanize but not sanitize and present the most compelling, unbiased story” of Michael Jackson, including elements of his personal struggles and career. However, Michael’s daughter, Paris Jackson, has criticized the film for not including her input and called early drafts “sugar-coated.”

During production, the filmmakers had to adjust the story to avoid legal issues. Certain scenes, including content related to Jordan Chandler, were removed or reshot. Despite these challenges, Lionsgate has confirmed the film remains on track for release.

The teaser, which was just released, shows some of the key moments from Michael’s early career and gives audiences a look at Jaafar Jackson as the pop icon. Industry insiders said the first footage was shown to theater owners at CinemaCon in April 2024 and received a positive reaction.

Michael is scheduled for release on April 24, in IMAX. Lionsgate will handle U.S. distribution, Universal Pictures will cover international markets, and Kino Films will distribute the movie in Japan. The film is expected to run about three and a half hours after some adjustments from its originally planned four-hour runtime.

This biopic has the potential to give fans a fresh look at Michael Jackson’s life while highlighting his musical talent and personal challenges. The new teaser already has fans talking, and anticipation is building for the full film. What do you think of the first look at Jaafar Jackson as Michael? Share your thoughts in the comments.
