A new teaser has dropped for Obsession, a horror film that’s already making waves on the festival circuit. Written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker, the movie tells the story of Bear, a music store worker played by Michael Johnston, who buys a mysterious toy and uses it to make his childhood friend Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, fall in love with him.

The film also features Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter in supporting roles.

Obsession premiered on September 5, at the Toronto International Film Festival during the Midnight Madness block, drawing early buzz from critics and audiences. Shortly after the premiere, Focus Features entered talks to acquire global distribution rights, excluding France, New Zealand, and Russia, for a reported $15 million.

The deal was finalized in October, and the film was showcased at the inaugural FocusFest on October 18. It is now scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on May 15, 2026.

The film has already earned strong critical attention. On Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of 33 critic reviews are positive, signaling a promising reception ahead of its wide release.

Obsession is being touted as a potential standout in the horror genre this year. With its mix of supernatural elements and psychological tension, Barker’s film seems to have captured the attention of both festival-goers and industry insiders. The recently released teaser gives fans their first glimpse of Bear’s twisted wish and the eerie consequences that follow.
