Few comeback seasons arrive carrying as much baggage as this one did. When ‘Ted Lasso‘ returned after a three-year hiatus, the Apple TV comedy faced the same question as its title character: why come back at all? The ‘Ted Lasso’ finale recap and ending explained below answers that, and then some.

Jason Sudeikis had long said the story was designed as a three-season arc. According to a Hollywood Reporter profile, he gathered the writers in Ojai, California, in early 2024 and came around to doing more. The new run premiered August 5 and aired weekly through October 7, built around AFC Richmond launching a women’s team.

Ted came back to London after his mother helped him see that simply being present for his son Henry wasn’t enough. Henry needed to watch him do something he loved, so Ted took charge of the Lady Greyhounds. Along the way he supported Alice through her anxiety and learned that believing can only get you so far.

Heading into the finale, titled “Being Alive,” the whole Richmond family was mourning Mae Green, who died shortly after watching the women pull off a comeback against Bristol City. The episode opens at the Crown & Anchor for her memorial. Niamh and Siobhan lead the room in “The Parting Glass,” a traditional farewell song, even though Mae wasn’t Irish.

Upstairs, Ted notices Henry is struggling more than he let on. Henry admits he wishes Mae could help with his homework again, then asks how Ted’s father died. Ted gives an evasive answer, and in a later scene he sits his son down and finally tells him the truth, though viewers never hear the conversation.

The ownership fight comes to a head at the shareholders’ meeting. Zelda reveals she was the one secretly buying up shares all season, through her associate Hugo Riddles. Rebecca had been so fixated on Rupert that she looked in the wrong direction.

Then comes the twist. Hugo sold the Milk Sisters’ shares back to Rebecca instead, leaving both women deadlocked at 49 percent. The deciding 2 percent belonged to Mae, who left it to Rebecca in her will, giving her 51 percent and the club. Rebecca forgives Zelda, and the two part on better terms than anyone expected.

Roy and Keeley’s storyline is the warmest thread. Keeley is pregnant, and as Roy tends to her, his agent calls with news that Chelsea has offered him the head coaching job. He also worries about being a good dad, so the Diamond Dogs are called in, with Ted advising that fatherhood is something you’re never ready for.

Roy ultimately accepts Chelsea’s offer but insists on finishing Richmond’s season first. As he packs up his office, he finds a note from Ted promising he’ll be a great dad, along with one of Ted’s little green Army men. He slips the soldier into his jacket pocket and walks out with Keeley.

Ted visits Rebecca with biscuits and hints he’d like to discuss her newly open manager position. The scene cuts away before she answers, so he hasn’t officially become Richmond’s manager, but his interest is clear. Alice, meanwhile, has become manager of the women’s team, with Beard and Ted as her assistants.

Rebecca has a big moment of her own when she proposes to Matthijs, who gets down on one knee to finish the job. Beard also gets a fresh start, ditching the earrings and shaving his head.

Apple hasn’t officially announced ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 5. Still, the ending leaves plenty of threads dangling, from Ted’s interest in the men’s job to Roy and Keeley’s baby. Nelson Road also sells out for the Lady Greyhounds’ final match, though we never learn the result.

The closing montage, set to Mae reciting Mary Oliver’s “When Death Comes,” ends with a note that there are 112 days until the start of next season.

What should Ted do next?
