‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Ted Faces His Toughest Sell Yet in “Curiouser and Curiouser”

‘Ted Lasso‘ returned to Apple TV+ after more than three years away, and the fourth season has wasted no time throwing its title character back into unfamiliar territory. The season premiere focused almost entirely on catching up with Ted stateside, following the emotional pull that eventually convinced him to leave Kansas with Michelle and Henry set to join him in a few days, and take on a brand-new challenge coaching AFC Richmond’s newly formed women’s team.

That premise fully kicks into gear in episode two, titled “Curiouser and Curiouser,” which drops Ted right back into London life. He’s settled into a rented room above The Crown and Anchor pub, run by longtime Richmond superfan Mae, who seems genuinely thrilled to have him back in town. Rather than his old “Biscuits with the Boss” routine, Ted shows up to Rebecca’s office with Kansas City barbecue instead, signaling that some things have changed even as the familiar Lasso charm remains firmly intact.

Much of the episode centers on the institutional hurdles facing the new women’s team, starting with the fact that the players have been crammed into a cramped space with a single bathroom instead of a proper locker room, something Ted immediately sets out to fix. That imbalance extends to how the team is perceived publicly as well, with Ted fielding almost exclusively men’s-team-related questions during his own press conference, while Rebecca overcorrects for the club’s perceived sexism by giving empowerment speeches and pointedly ordering feminist literature for the office.

The episode’s emotional core, though, belongs to Ted’s evolving relationship with assistant coach Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds. Introduced as sharp-tongued and openly resentful of Ted taking the head coaching job she felt she deserved, Alice starts the episode announcing her resignation to Rebecca. Ted, characteristically undeterred, greets her honestly rather than avoiding the tension, openly acknowledging what he’s heard about her reputation without pretending otherwise.

That honesty gradually chips away at Alice’s guarded exterior throughout the episode. When one of the players suffers a serious injury during practice, Alice immediately rushes to help, later referring to the injured player as belonging to “our” team, a small but telling shift revealing she still sees herself as part of Richmond’s future despite her frustration. Ted picks up on that shift and works to convince her to stay, appealing directly to her own history as a promising player whose career was cut short by injury.

By episode’s end, that persistence pays off. Ted reveals to Alice that he knows the full extent of her story, a moment that genuinely moves her, and she ultimately decides to stay on as his assistant coach. Ted leaves her a parting gift as a gesture of goodwill before their conversation wraps, though its contents remain a mystery for now.

The episode’s other major storyline follows Coach Beard, who’s spent the time since Ted’s departure working as an assistant under Roy Kent with the men’s team. Sensing how badly Beard wants to reunite with Ted, Roy ultimately lets him go, effectively releasing him from the men’s squad so he can rejoin his best friend. Beard shows up overjoyed to share the news with Ted just as his conversation with Alice wraps, leading to a celebratory moment between the two longtime friends, one that leaves Beard’s wife Jane watching on with visible uncertainty about what it might mean for their own dynamic.

With Alice choosing to stay and Beard officially back by Ted’s side, Richmond’s new women’s team now has its full coaching staff assembled heading into the rest of the season.
