Thanos and Doctor Doom Could Share One Connection in the MCU, Rumors Say
Thanos is one of the most famous villains in fiction, and his role in the MCU made him even more iconic. Sure, he’s been memed a lot, but what really made him stand out was how people debated whether he was actually right about trying to solve the universe’s overpopulation and resource problems.
For a long time, it seemed impossible to replace Thanos as the big villain in the MCU. Kang the Conqueror tried to take that spot, but audiences didn’t really connect with him. Even Kevin Feige admitted that the plan to move forward with a new villain was in motion long before Jonathan Majors faced legal issues.
Now, it looks like Doctor Doom might be the perfect replacement. Doom is a hugely popular character in the comics, maybe even more so than Thanos. We don’t know exactly what Doom’s goals are in the MCU yet, but if the movies follow the Secret Wars storyline, his plans probably won’t be one-dimensional. He’ll likely have a strong reason for trying to take over reality.
Industry insider Alex Perez recently shared some details about Avengers: Doomsday. In a Q&A, a fan asked him about the roles of Shang-Chi and Shuri. Perez said, “I genuinely don’t recall mentioning Shuri being a side-character or differentiating the importance of roles between these two characters, but the way I see it, and it has been described to me, the heroes who have been the faces of Phases 4, 5 and 6, (primarily in the movies) will be the ones who have a bigger focus in Doomsday but would (or at least try to) have equal screentime and appearances.”
Perez also explained that the scripts are still being written without a fixed runtime, so it’s hard to know exactly how long each character will appear on screen. But he confirmed one big thing: “The main character, or ‘hero’ for Avengers: Doomsday, will be Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, in the same way Josh Brolin’s Thanos was the main character of Avengers: Infinity War.”
This makes a lot of sense. Fans have been frustrated by how little Doom has appeared so far. In Fantastic Four: First Steps, he only showed up for a couple of seconds, and that’s after the MCU spent four projects building up Kang as the next big multiverse threat. Perez’s comments suggest that Avengers: Doomsday will finally give Doom the spotlight he deserves, showing audiences just how dangerous he really is.
It seems like the MCU is gearing up to give Doctor Doom the same kind of presence Thanos had, and fans are going to see why he’s such a threat.
