The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Script Trick That Has Fans Convinced Marvel Is Hiding Something Big
Anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been building for months, with fans piecing together clues from set photos, cast reveals and cryptic actor interviews. The film’s sprawling roster, pulling together Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts characters, has made it one of the most secretive productions in recent memory. Every new comment from a cast member seems to only deepen the mystery rather than clear it up.
That secrecy has apparently gone further than anyone expected. Entertainment Weekly claims that the entire ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ cast received a full script, but that the studio reportedly circulated 50 different versions of it. This approach would explain why so many actors have given conflicting or vague answers when asked what they actually know about the plot.
The claim tracks with what several cast members have already said publicly. Alan Cumming, who plays Nightcrawler, described the production as “superhero soup” with so many characters that he could barely keep up, adding that the scripts were difficult to read because “everyone’s got two names.” He also revealed that some characters were given secret names in the script specifically so surprise returns would not leak, calling the whole process “so confusing.”
Rebecca Romijn, who reprises her role as Mystique, added to the confusion earlier in production, confirming that the script had not even been finished while filming was underway. Kelsey Grammer, returning as Beast, offered a similarly cagey response when asked about his own knowledge of the story, telling Rob Lowe on the “Literally!” podcast that he had only received a preliminary introduction to the idea, since Marvel remained very secretive about the script.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has framed the constant rewrites as part of the studio’s normal workflow rather than a sign of trouble behind the scenes. Feige described the ongoing changes as part of Marvel’s creative process, referring to the daily script tweaks as “plus-ing” and noting that this kind of revision happens on set every day. Still, reports about the film’s post production have not been entirely smooth, with some describing the editing process as chaotic given the sheer scale of the ensemble.
Whether the 50 versions detail refers to full alternate scripts or simply pages tailored with different character aliases for each actor remains unclear, but it fits the pattern of an unusually locked down shoot. With dozens of heroes crossing over from multiple corners of the MCU, keeping details contained until the film’s December 18 release appears to be Marvel’s top priority.
Fans have already speculated online that the actors claiming ignorance about the plot might simply be protecting spoilers rather than genuinely being left in the dark. Given how tightly Marvel has controlled information so far, that theory does not seem far fetched.
