The ‘Between Steps’ K-Drama Finally Arrives, and Its Trailers Promise Sweet, Bitter Heartache
Few directors shaped the modern Korean romance quite like Ahn Pan Seok. He helmed the hit dramas ‘Something in the Rain,’ ‘One Spring Night,’ and ‘The Midnight Romance in Hagwon.’ Those titles built his reputation as a filmmaker who knew how to make quiet moments hit hard.
That reputation is a big part of why the new K-drama ‘Between Steps’ has generated so much goodwill before a single episode aired. One K-drama guide describes it as the final drama shot by the late director, and says his earlier work made him one of Korean TV’s most reliable hands at slow, adult romance that trusts silence as much as dialogue. For longtime fans, this series carries extra emotional weight.
Now the wait is over. ‘Between Steps’ premiered on October 5 at 10 p.m. on ENA, and the K-drama streams on Disney+ in select regions. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, the teasers released over the past few weeks set the tone well.
The first teaser opens with Park Min Jae boldly telling a startled Im Yoo Jin that he likes her, and it ends with her leaning in for a kiss. It plays like a whirlwind romance, with the two seeping into each other’s lives. Two earlier mood teasers were quieter, showing the pair sharing an umbrella in the rain and riding a bus together.
The second teaser flips the dynamic. Im Yoo Jin makes what she calls a formal confession, sliding a ring box across the table, while Park Min Jae is seen struggling with pain in his leg. It suggests that her directness will run into his reluctance.
The most recent teaser is the heaviest of the three. It shows Park Min Jae visibly uncomfortable as he removes his prosthetic leg, then hints at a breakup, with Im Yoo Jin asking whether he lacks the courage to hold onto her. After the sweetness of the earlier clips, it makes clear this will not be a simple love story.

That tension sits at the center of the premise. Choo Young Woo plays Park Min Jae, a doctoral student who was a competitive swimmer in high school before losing a leg to illness, and who later discovers robotics. Kim So Hyun plays Im Yoo Jin, a new member of his research lab, who changes direction after her path to graduate school is blocked.
The setting gives the romance an unusual backdrop. The story unfolds in a robotics research lab and follows the daily lives and romances of graduate students. At its heart is Yoo Jin’s bold, straightforward personality gradually melting Min Jae’s tightly guarded heart.
The marketing leans into that contrast between the leads. The poster shows the pair sitting side by side on campus, eating ice cream, with a tagline describing a spicy, bitter and sweet romance between two young people who are inexperienced at love. The line captures the drama’s mix of warmth and pain.
Behind the scenes, the cast seems to have connected early. Choo Young Woo said the chemistry among the cast members was really great at the first script reading. The supporting cast includes Kim Min Seok, Seo Jeong Yeon, Park Hyuk Kwon and Shim Hye Jin.
With the first episode now out, the question is whether ‘Between Steps’ can live up to the director’s legacy and the heartache its trailers promise. The drama has plenty going for it: a well-regarded romance director, two leads with obvious chemistry, and a story about starting over. If you’re in the mood for a love story that hurts a little as it goes, this one is worth a look.
