‘The Boys’ Finale Explained: Why Soldier Boy Wasn’t There and What Comes Next
The Boys Season 5 finale delivered a packed ending full of major twists, but one major character was missing from the final showdown. Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles, does not appear in Episode 8 titled “Blood and Bone,” even though he played a key role earlier in the series. His absence was noticeable as the story brought several long-running arcs to a close.
In the finale, Butcher and the rest of the team launch a final attack on the White House. Homelander is killed, and many of the main characters get a resolved ending. But Soldier Boy, who once helped shape the conflict by giving Homelander his V-One abilities, is nowhere to be seen during the last battle.
This was not a sudden decision. According to showrunner Eric Kripke, Soldier Boy was never planned to appear in the final episode. He was already placed back into cryo-freeze in the previous episode by Homelander, which left him out of the main conflict. Since most characters believed he was either out of the picture or not a direct threat anymore, there was no narrative reason to bring him into the finale.
His absence also helps keep the story open-ended. Soldier Boy is still alive, just frozen, which means he can return in future stories within the franchise. Vought is still active in some form, with Stan Edgar returning as interim CEO, so the possibility of him being found again remains open.
The upcoming prequel series Vought Rising adds another layer to his future. The show, which is set in the 1950s, will bring back Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront. It will explore the early days of Vought and also focus on a mystery involving the company’s origins. While it is mainly set in the past, it may also connect to present-day events after The Boys finale.
According to Prime Video, Vought Rising will also include new characters played by Elizabeth Posey, Will Hochman, Mason Dye, and others. The series is currently expected to release in 2027 and will expand the world of The Boys further.

Jensen Ackles also shared his thoughts on the ending in an interview, saying, “No because it’s ending, I want more. I want seasons 6, 7 and 8. You’re talking to a guy that did 15 seasons of a show so I’m like ‘really 5 that’s it, that’s all we’re getting, come on we can do more than that.’”
While Soldier Boy’s absence in the finale left some fans surprised, it also sets up future possibilities for the character. With his story still unfinished and multiple spin-offs in development, it seems likely that he will return in some form in the expanding world of The Boys.
