The Brutal Audition That Cost Chris Evans a Role in a Controversial Movie
Chris Evans is now known around the world as Captain America, but his career did not start that way. Before his big break, he spent years working in projects that did not bring him major success.
Early on, Evans even tried out for a role in The Dreamers, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. The film was highly talked about at the time, and many young actors wanted to be part of it. However, his audition did not go as planned.
In an interview with IMDb, Evans shared the moment. He said, “I had a horrible experience at that audition. It was early 2000s and it was the movie that everybody wanted. I went and had to audition. I sat in this audition room, waiting with like 15 other guys for hours. I finally walk in the room, I open the door, and the casting director looked up, and he was like, ‘Nope. Nope, nope, nope’. I was like, ‘Oh, Jesus’.”
The role later went to Michael Pitt, who starred alongside Eva Green. The film became known for its bold and controversial story.
Even though he missed out on that role, Evans kept working. He started with TV shows like Opposite Sex and later appeared in teen films such as Not Another Teen Movie. He gained more attention when he played the Human Torch in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Over the years, he also took on roles in comic book and graphic novel projects like TMNT, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Snowpiercer.
Outside of those, Evans showed his range in films like Gifted and Knives Out. He also appeared in the series Defending Jacob and action movies such as The Gray Man and Red One. He even voiced Buzz Lightyear in Lightyear and returned as Lucas Lee in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
His career changed in a big way when he was cast as Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger. That role made him one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, and he is expected to return again in Avengers: Doomsday.
That one failed audition did not stop him. It actually led him to something bigger.
