β€˜The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Smashes Box Office, Overtakes Original in Just 2 Weeks

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is doing very strong at the box office and is already being compared directly to the original film. According to box office tracker Comscore, the sequel is performing better than expected and has now passed a major milestone in just two weeks.

The new report shows that the sequel earned $43 million in its second weekend in theaters in North America. That was enough for it to stay at number one, even with strong competition from other big releases.

What makes this more interesting is how it compares to The Devil Wears Prada. The original movie, which became a long-lasting hit and cultural favorite, finished its full box office run at around $326.7 million worldwide. That number was built over months in theaters after its release.

The sequel, however, is moving much faster. In only two weeks, it has already built massive global numbers. Reports from Comscore say it has reached $433.2 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. That means it has already passed the total lifetime earnings of the original film in a much shorter time window.

This is why many analysts are calling the sequel a surprise box office success. It is not just performing well domestically, but also bringing in strong international numbers. The early global total of $118.8 million added in its second weekend helped push it further ahead of expectations.

The original film was a slow-building success when it first came out. It did not open with huge blockbuster numbers, but instead grew steadily thanks to strong reviews, word of mouth, and repeated viewings. Over time, it became one of the most recognizable fashion films ever made.

The sequel is taking a different path. Instead of slow growth, it is showing big early numbers right away. That difference is one of the main reasons the comparison between the two films is getting so much attention.

According to Comscore, the sequel’s strong second weekend helped it stay ahead of Mortal Kombat 2, which also had a solid performance with $40 million domestically but could not match the fashion film’s hold at number one.

Industry tracking also shows that the sequel’s success is a major win for its studio, especially because it is the first big hit they have had in a while. The strong performance has also set a new personal record for lead actress Meryl Streep in terms of opening and early box office impact.

Even though the original film had a slower start, its long-term success made it a classic. Now the sequel is proving it can reach those same heights much faster, even if its full theatrical run is still ongoing.

Next week could still bring new competition, with upcoming releases expected to challenge its top position. But for now, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is clearly leading the box office and has already outpaced the original film’s total earnings timeline in record time.
