‘The Empress’ Final Season Release Date and Trailer Revealed as Elisabeth Faces Her Hardest Choice Yet
Few European period dramas have found a global audience the way ‘The Empress‘ has. The German-language series turned Empress Elisabeth of Austria into a streaming favorite, and fans have spent two years waiting to learn how her story ends. The wait for the final season is now measured in weeks.
The show’s track record explains the anticipation. Since debuting on Netflix in September 2022, it has become one of the platform’s most-watched German titles, with 13 weeks in the global top 10 and an appearance in the daily top 10 in 91 countries. The first season also won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2023.
On Wednesday, Netflix finally gave fans their first real look at what comes next. The streamer released the official trailer, first-look images and key art for the third and final season, with the premiere date set for November 12. A post from the platform teased the moment with the line that her title made her famous, but her determination makes her unforgettable.

The trailer runs just under two minutes and opens with the gates of Schönbrunn Palace swinging open one last time. It finds Elisabeth torn between duty and desire, hearing a warning that the life she dreams of will never come true. One of the clips shows her at an iron gate, with a crowd of desperate commoners reaching toward her through the bars.
The final season runs six episodes, arriving just under two years after the second season debuted in November 2024. It is the last chapter of a story Netflix confirmed would end after its renewal.
The story picks up after the devastating Sardinian War. Emperor Franz, played by Philip Froissant, returns to Vienna a traumatized man, weighed down by the loss of thousands of young soldiers. Elisabeth, played by Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, fights to hold their marriage together while pushing for the empire’s future.
Her efforts largely fail. Franz’s unfaithfulness and mounting resistance at court push her health into rapid decline, and she leaves Vienna for a distant island to recover. On that journey she meets Count Andrássy, the leader of the Hungarian revolution, played by newcomer Dejan Bućin.
Their meeting sparks a strong intellectual and physical attraction, and leaves Elisabeth with an impossible choice. She can follow her heart without compromise, or become the empress her people need. That dilemma looks to be the emotional core of the finale.
The story also stretches well beyond the Austrian court. Franz’s brother Maximilian, played by Johannes Nussbaum, and his wife Marie, played by Josephine Thiesen, set off on a massive adventure as he prepares to take the imperial throne in Mexico. Netflix describes the series as moving between Vienna, Hungary, Mexico and Prussia, with opulent settings throughout.
The new promotional images hint at the season’s mood. The poster shows a regal but somber Elisabeth beside an ornate red and gold throne, wrapped in a heavy grey coat. Other stills show a tense candlelit moment between Franz and Elisabeth, Franz standing alone in a foggy field in his military uniform, and Archduchess Sophie presiding over a dining table. Elisabeth is also seen relaxing under a parasol by the sea and leaping off a rocky cliff into the ocean with a companion.

Katharina Eyssen returns as showrunner, sharing creative responsibility with executive producer Robert Eyssen. Florian Cossen and Julia Langhof direct, and Sommerhaus Serien produces. Filming took place in Bavaria, the Czech Republic and Spain.
For fans worried about life after the finale, Netflix is already working on a spiritual successor. A new German historical drama called ‘Dolly’ has begun filming and is expected to fill the gap left behind by ‘The Empress.’ That is a welcome sign, but nothing will fully replace the series’ blend of romance, politics and grand costume drama.
With a trailer in hand and the premiere date locked in, the countdown to Elisabeth’s last dance has officially begun.
What do you think Elisabeth will choose in the final season?
