Streamers rarely commit to a third season before audiences have even had a chance to watch the second, but that’s exactly the kind of confidence Netflix is showing in one of its biggest recent hits. Guy Ritchie’s stylish crime drama has spent the past two years steadily building a devoted following, and the platform clearly isn’t waiting around to find out if that momentum continues.

“The Gentlemen” first launched on Netflix in March 2024, spinning off from Ritchie’s 2020 film of the same name and quickly climbing the platform’s global charts. The series follows Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James, as he unexpectedly inherits his aristocratic family’s estate, only to discover it doubles as a sprawling criminal empire he’s forced to navigate alongside Kaya Scodelario’s Susie Glass.

Netflix has now confirmed that the show is officially renewed for a third season, with the announcement arriving just days ahead of Season 2’s global release on September 3. Ritchie himself spoke about the decision to keep expanding the story. “The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded, and the consequences carry weight. Season 2 picks up a year after the events of the first season, following Eddie and Susie as they continue expanding their illicit operation. This time, the story pushes beyond the English countryside entirely, taking the action into Italy and introducing the Italian mafia as a new element of the conflict, with Hugh Bonneville and Michele Morrone joining the cast for what Netflix is describing as a darker, more expansive chapter.

That international escalation appears to be exactly what convinced Netflix to lock in a third season so early. Production on Season 3 is reportedly scheduled to begin later this year, though specific plot details for the upcoming installment remain tightly under wraps for now.

The renewal news arrives amid a flurry of separate reporting tying Meghan Markle to a potential role in Season 3. Deadline first connected the Duchess of Sussex to the series, framing her as being eyed for a “high-profile” UK-based project following reports that she and her family plan to relocate back to the United Kingdom, though Deadline stressed at the time that talks remained in very early stages.

That speculation took a sharp turn over the weekend, with reporting from Tina Brown’s newsletter suggesting Markle had already been dropped from consideration entirely. “The backlash in the UK was so intense, it became untenable to go forward,” Brown wrote regarding the reported collapse of talks. Netflix declined to comment directly on Markle’s potential involvement in the series when asked.

According to reporting, the timing of today’s official Season 3 confirmation wasn’t purely coincidental to the Markle news cycle. The renewal itself has reportedly been in the works internally since late spring or early summer, suggesting Netflix simply chose to move up the public announcement amid the surrounding buzz and speculation rather than making a reactive decision.

That distinction matters for a series that’s clearly become one of Netflix’s more reliable global performers, with Season 1 spending ten weeks on the platform’s Global Top 10 English language TV chart following its debut. With Season 2 poised to expand the show’s scope even further and Season 3 already locked in before those new episodes even premiere, “The Gentlemen” appears firmly positioned as one of Netflix’s flagship ongoing crime dramas for the foreseeable future.
