Fans of the 1985 classic The Goonies finally have some exciting news about a long-discussed sequel.

Writer Potsy Ponciroli shared an update on the project during a Deadline event at the Venice Film Festival, revealing that the movie is “moving in the right direction.” Ponciroli said he has already completed a first draft of the script, which was very well received, and is now about 95% done with a second draft.

Ponciroli acknowledged that a sequel to such a beloved film comes with high expectations.

“I know there’s a lot of ‘do we need a new Goonies,’ but I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favourite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans,” he said. He added that a director has not yet been announced and it is still unclear when production will start.

The road to a sequel has been long and uncertain. Over the years, members of the original cast and crew have both confirmed and denied the idea.

Director Richard Donner once said a sequel was a “definite thing” and that it would include as much of the original cast as possible. However, actors like Corey Feldman have at times dismissed the project. In a 2008 blog post, Feldman wrote, “NO! There is no Goonies 2! I’m sorry but it’s just not gonna happen …. Course now that I’ve said that, they’ll do it.”

Despite this, interest in a follow-up has never died. Sean Astin told MTV in 2007 that Goonies 2 was “an absolute certainty,” and Steven Spielberg has said multiple times that he and Donner have brainstormed ideas over the years.

This year, the project gained momentum when some of the original cast reunited with writer Chris Columbus to celebrate Ke Huy Quan’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Quan said, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.” Feldman added, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”

In February, it was officially announced that The Goonies 2 was in development. Potsy Ponciroli is writing the script, with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario producing for Amblin Entertainment. Chris Columbus is also involved as a producer, and Lauren Shuler Donner is serving as executive producer.

This update from Ponciroli is the first clear sign that the sequel is progressing, and it gives fans hope that the beloved adventure story will continue.

Personally, I think it’s exciting to see new life being breathed into a classic that has meant so much to generations of moviegoers. What do you think? Are you excited for The Goonies 2, or do you feel the original should be left alone? Share your thoughts in the comments.
