The ‘House of the Dragon‘ season 3 finale finally delivered the war torn showdown fans had circled on their calendars for weeks, and the Battle of Tumbleton did not disappoint on carnage. Titled ‘Episode 8,’ the finale centers on the Battle of Tumbleton, where Daemon and Roddy finally confront the scheming Ormund Hightower and the newly knighted Daeron the Daring. By the time the smoke cleared over the Reach, the answer to who actually came out on top was messier and bloodier than anyone expected.
This was billed as the true turning point of the Dance of the Dragons, and the show leaned all the way into that promise. The episode built toward the First Battle of Tumbleton, a confrontation that had been teased since Ormund Hightower’s forces seized the city earlier in the season. Who Wins the Battle of Tumbleton?
The short answer is that the Blacks technically win, but at a horrifying cost. Ulf White and his dragon Silverwing burn Daemon’s troops first, sending huge gouts of flame down upon those he had sworn to fight alongside, before turning on Tumbleton itself and leaving the town in smoldering ruin, taking Ormund with it. It is not Ulf’s fire that actually finishes off Lord Ormund, though. It’s Roddy the Ruin who deals the killing blow to the Hightower patriarch, after he and his wild Northmen rampage through the city, managing to stick the Hightower lord even after losing an arm. Roddy’s death is framed as a gruesome triumph rather than a clean victory, and it sets the tone for how costly this win really is for Rhaenyra’s side.
Daemon himself does not escape the fighting unscathed either. He is very nearly slain as he battles his way through the city, outmatched by the rather large and heavily armored Ser Jon Roxton, Ormund’s right hand man. The near miss underscores just how chaotic and personal the fighting inside Tumbleton’s walls becomes once the dragons stop dictating the outcome.
Battle of Tumbleton’s Casualties
The human cost of this fight is staggering even by ‘House of the Dragon’ standards. Lord Ormund Hightower is dead, cut down by Roddy in the middle of the burning city, and his death effectively decapitates the Greens’ most calculating strategist. The death marks the collapse of the Greens’ most cunning strategist this season, closing out a rivalry that had simmered since Ormund’s forces first took the city.
Roddy the Ruin does not survive his own moment of vengeance either. Ormund looks on in horror as Roddy raises his arms, or what’s left of them, and bellows laughter, a good death for the old warrior but hardly the outcome the Hightower lord had in mind. The finale includes the off camera death of Kat during Targaryen raids on Hightower loyalists throughout Tumbleton, alongside Helaena’s death back in King’s Landing. The scale of loss makes it clear that nobody involved in this fight walks away with a clean win.
Ormund Hightower’s Death and the Dragonseed Betrayal
Ulf White’s betrayal is arguably the single biggest swing in the entire battle, and it comes from a character who spent much of the season looking like comic relief. Ulf had lost his mind in the tavern beforehand, telling anyone who would listen that Rhaenyra wouldn’t let Daemon join the battle, and it was clear he was drunk and ready to become a traitor. That drunken spiral pays off in devastating fashion once the fighting actually starts.
The show’s version of events departs sharply from George R.R. Martin’s original text, and that divergence is a big part of why this battle hits differently for readers of the books.
In ‘Fire and Blood,’ the Battle of Tumbleton sees Ulf and Hugh Hammer betray the Blacks by siding with the Greens before burning Tumbleton to the ground, a fight that led to the death of multiple important figures in the Dance of the Dragons, including Ormund Hightower himself. The show inverts key details of that betrayal while still landing on Ormund’s death as the outcome.
Ormund’s role in the show has also been beefed up considerably compared to his book counterpart, giving his death extra weight. Ormund is given a great deal more character and power and cleverness in the show, essentially becoming the puppet master in place of the scheming Larys from the books, giving Rhaenyra a proper villain while Aegon and Aemond remain sidelined. Losing that character now shifts the entire political calculus of the Greens going into season 4.
What the Battle of Tumbleton Means for Season 4
With Ormund gone and Aegon’s shocking survival already scrambling the board, the Targaryen civil war heads into its next chapter looking more unpredictable than ever. Aegon’s survival proves to be the finale’s biggest political reversal, and with Aemond left both physically and emotionally damaged from earlier events, the Targaryen civil war now looks far more fractured heading into its next chapter. That fracture within the Greens’ own camp may end up mattering more than anything that happened on the Tumbleton battlefield itself.
The finale also leaves the door open for a second, even bloodier confrontation at the same location down the road. The Second Battle of Tumbleton happens the same day the Caltrops plan to launch their coup, when Addam of Hull leads an army of vengeful Rivermen in a surprise raid on the city, a fight that wipes out Hugh the Hammer, Jon Roxton, Daeron Targaryen, Addam of Hull, and the dragons Seasmoke, Tessarion, and Vermithor. Whether the show saves that carnage for season 4 remains to be seen, but the groundwork has clearly been laid.
For now, fans finally have official confirmation that the story is not ending here. HBO has already confirmed ‘House of the Dragon’ will return for a fourth and final season, currently expected in 2028, promising to bring the Dance of the Dragons to its ultimate conclusion. With Ormund dead, Ulf’s loyalty in shambles, and Aegon back in the picture, the Greens are entering the next chapter more divided than they have ever been.
