Netflix is bringing back one of the most popular British comedy franchises of the late 2000s. According to Variety, The Inbetweeners is officially returning with a reunion movie currently in development, with the original main cast expected to come back.

Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison, and James Buckley are all attached to return as Will, Simon, Neil, and Jay, the four friends who became known for their awkward school experiences, terrible decisions, and hilarious conversations. However, Variety reports that final deals with the actors have not been completed yet.

The news marks a major comeback for a series that became a huge part of British comedy culture. Originally airing on E4 from 2008 to 2010, The Inbetweeners followed a group of teenagers trying to survive school life, friendships, and the struggles of growing up.

The show focused on Will MacKenzie, played by Simon Bird, a smart but socially awkward student who joins forces with Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright. Together, the group dealt with embarrassing moments, failed attempts at romance, and the everyday problems of teenage life.

Unlike many teen shows at the time, The Inbetweeners became popular because it showed a much more uncomfortable and realistic version of adolescence. The series was known for its crude humor, awkward situations, and the characters constantly finding themselves in ridiculous situations.

After the original series ended, the franchise continued with two successful movies. The first film, released in 2011, became a major box office hit and set a record at the time for the biggest opening weekend ever for a British comedy. The sequel followed in 2014 and also performed strongly in theaters.

The return of the franchise comes after rights holders Banijay U.K. announced in 2025 that they had reached an agreement with creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, along with their production company Fudge Park Productions, to bring The Inbetweeners back.

At the time, fans knew the comedy was returning but had no idea what form the comeback would take. Now, it appears Netflix will be the home for the next chapter of the franchise.

Morris and Beesley previously shared their excitement about continuing the story, saying, “Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends).”

The creators have not revealed any details about the movie’s story yet, so it remains unclear where the characters will be when audiences see them again. Fans are also waiting to find out whether the reunion will pick up directly after the previous movies or explore the characters as adults.

Netflix has not officially commented on the project, but the return of the original cast has already created excitement among longtime fans who grew up watching the series.

Nearly two decades after The Inbetweeners first premiered, the franchise is preparing to bring back the same group of unforgettable characters. If the reunion movie captures the same awkward humor and chaotic energy that made the original series a hit, it could become one of the biggest comedy comebacks in recent years.

How do you feel about the original cast returning for a new Inbetweeners movie?
