The King of Pop Reclaims the Crown: ‘Michael’ Breaks 10 Major Box Office Records
The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has officially become one of the biggest movie success stories of 2026. After dominating theaters around the world for weeks, the film is now opening in Japan, giving it another chance to add to its already massive box office total.
According to industry reports, the movie has earned more than $911 million worldwide so far, including $358.6 million in North America and $553.3 million from international markets. With Japan now joining the rollout, many analysts believe Michael could soon pass the $1 billion mark worldwide. If that happens, it would become only the second movie released in 2026 to reach that milestone, following Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The film stars Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle and is directed by Antoine Fuqua. While audiences have responded strongly to the story, one of the biggest talking points has been the incredible number of records the movie has broken during its theatrical run.
Michael has officially become the highest-grossing theatrical release in Lionsgate’s history. That achievement alone places the film among the studio’s most successful projects ever. The movie has outperformed every previous Lionsgate release at the global box office and continues to set new milestones as it expands into additional markets.
The film has also rewritten the record books for musical biopics. Michael is now the highest-grossing musical biopic ever made worldwide. It surpassed previous genre champions and established a new benchmark for future music-based films.
Its opening weekend was equally impressive. The movie delivered the largest global opening weekend ever recorded for a musical biopic. Audiences across the world turned out in huge numbers, helping the film break records from its very first days in theaters.
The success was not limited to one or two countries. Reports indicate that 65 international markets delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for a musical biopic. That level of worldwide support helped turn Michael into a truly global event.
The film has also surpassed the total box office earnings of Bohemian Rhapsody in 40 international markets. Countries including Brazil, France, and Mexico all generated higher grosses for Michael than they did for the Oscar-winning Queen biopic.
Brazil proved especially important. Michael became the highest-grossing film ever released by Universal in the country. That is a remarkable achievement considering the studio’s long history and extensive catalog of blockbuster releases.
France delivered another major victory. The film became the highest-grossing biopic in French box office history, overtaking the beloved French classic La Môme, known internationally as La Vie En Rose.
The records continued in North America as well. Michael now holds the title of the highest-grossing music biopic ever at the domestic box office. It is also officially the highest-grossing biopic of any kind in domestic box office history.

Its debut weekend added one more major accomplishment. The movie secured the largest domestic opening weekend ever recorded for a musical biopic, setting the tone for the historic run that followed.
The road to success was not completely smooth. Reports revealed that the production underwent approximately $50 million in reshoots after issues related to the screenplay were discovered. Despite those challenges, the final result has connected with audiences worldwide.
As Michael continues expanding into new territories, its record-breaking run shows no signs of slowing down. With Japan now joining the release schedule and the billion-dollar mark within reach, the film is already being remembered as one of the biggest box office success stories in recent years.
