Marvel’s X-Men casting rumor mill has been running at full speed all summer, with fans dissecting every meeting, audition report, and offhand comment for clues about who will populate the studio’s rebooted mutant roster. Amid names like Samara Weaving and Kit Connor circulating for confirmed or reported roles, one particular pairing of actor and villain has generated its own persistent buzz online.

That speculation centers on Wagner Moura, the Brazilian actor who won acclaim and awards attention for his recent work, being linked to Mister Sinister, one of the X-Men’s most enduring and manipulative antagonists. The character has floated around Marvel casting rumors for years, dating back to speculation tied to earlier X-Men-adjacent projects, making Moura’s name the latest to get swept into the ongoing guessing game.

Wagner Moura addressed the rumors that he’ll play Mister Sinister in Marvel Studios’ upcoming ‘X-Men’ film during an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for The Last House, making clear that despite the online speculation, nothing has actually happened on his end.

He explained, “Dude, I’ve been reading these things on the internet, and people are sending that to me. I mean, I’m a fan of that whole entire universe, especially when I was a kid reading all those graphic novels and everything. But there’s nothing. No one contacted me about it. It’s just something that people read. But on the internet, I don’t know nothing honestly about it. I would love it.”

Mister Sinister first appeared in ‘The Uncanny X-Men’ #221 back in 1987, created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Marc Silvestri as a fresh threat for the team beyond the franchise’s usual reliance on Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Born Nathaniel Essex in Victorian London, the character is a human scientist obsessed with engineering a genetically perfect version of humanity, a fixation that deepens once he encounters mutants and the ancient mutant villain Apocalypse. Rather than confronting heroes directly, Sinister typically operates through agents and long-term manipulation, including a storyline in which he’s revealed to have secretly influenced Cyclops’ life since childhood.

That combination of scientific menace and psychological control has made the character a persistent fan favorite for live-action adaptation, particularly as Marvel has worked to establish its rebooted mutant lineup following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Since the Infinity Saga concluded with ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the studio has steadily dipped into X-Men territory, most notably through the 2014 introduction of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff under a specific licensing arrangement predating the full franchise reboot now underway.

Moura’s comments arrive amid a genuinely active stretch for X-Men casting news, following closely behind reports linking Samara Weaving to Emma Frost and Kit Connor to Cyclops. That pattern of near-constant speculation reflects just how much attention Marvel’s mutant reboot has generated since director Jake Schreier came aboard, even as the studio has kept most of its actual casting decisions tightly under wraps.

For now, Moura’s situation remains squarely in rumor territory rather than confirmed casting, though his openly enthusiastic response leaves plenty of room for fans to keep hoping. Given how quickly other reported X-Men castings have shifted from online speculation to studio confirmation this summer, it wouldn’t be surprising if Moura’s name resurfaces again before the film’s full roster is finally locked in.

With no official comment from Marvel and Moura himself admitting he’s just as in the dark as everyone else, the Mister Sinister mystery remains unsolved for now.
