Johnny Depp once pulled off a hilarious prank on Marlon Brando using a fart machine, revealing a side of the legendary actor that fans rarely see. Depp shared the story in his introduction to Christie’s 2005 collection, The Personal Property of Marlon Brando, showing that Brando’s sense of humor was as strong as his acting talent.

“Of all levels of connection, the most consistent was humour. Humour, often meaning practical jokes,” Depp wrote. “There was no one more gifted in this arena or as skilled a craftsman as Marlon.”

He added that Brando had a childlike sense of humor, explaining, “I once asked him why it was that farts were always funny. He replied, ‘Because they are blatantly anti-social.’”

The prank started when Brando asked Depp to take a small part in a movie set in Ireland. Depp, who had endured several of Brando’s practical jokes in the past, saw an opportunity for payback.

When he arrived at Brando’s house for dinner and a discussion about the film, Depp had secretly brought a small rubber device that could make realistic fart sounds.

Over the course of the evening, Depp activated the device at random moments while joking about eating strange foods. Brando tried to stay polite, but he couldn’t hold back for long.

“I kept him going for a good half-hour and only let up when his laughter turned to an expression of worry and he was reaching for the phone to get a doctor,” Depp recalled. “‘Ah…that’s not normal, John, you’re not well. You’re sick. You’re ripping about three beauties a minute and…ah that’s just not right.’”

After revealing the prank, Depp gifted the device to Brando, who reacted with delight. “I’ve found God!” Brando exclaimed. Depp said the fart machine became a source of entertainment for them for years.

Once the joke settled, Brando returned to business. He told Depp they would start filming on Monday and asked how his accent was coming along.

Depp was confused until Brando revealed, “The Dublin accent. Didn’t you read the script? You’re playing a reporter from Dublin!” Depp had less than a day and a half to master the accent before filming, and Brando’s laughter showed he had planned the twist all along.

This story adds to the many legendary tales of Brando’s playful and unpredictable personality. It also shows Depp’s mischievous side, proving that even Hollywood icons can enjoy a good laugh.
