Fantasy adventure shows live and die by their finales, and few franchises understand that better than the ‘Librarians‘ universe. Built on a legacy of magical mysteries and found-family charm dating back to 2014, ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ has spent its second season quietly building toward a confrontation fans had been anticipating since the trailer first teased dragons, castle imagery and knights in armor.
That confrontation finally arrived with the season’s two-part finale, and it delivered on a question that had loomed over the entire year: what exactly was Merlin after. The sophomore season pitted the Librarians Vikram, Lysa and Connor, alongside Guardian Charlie and Elaine, against Dominic Monaghan’s version of the legendary wizard, whose corrupting obsession with magic once brought down Camelot itself.
The finale, titled “And the Camelot Conundrum,” spends its runtime making viewers believe Merlin has actually succeeded in traveling back through time and rewriting history, only to pull the rug out from under everyone by the closing minutes. Rather than helping Arthur fulfill his destiny, Merlin decides he alone should shape the future, claiming the sword in the stone and the throne for himself while using foreknowledge of history’s mistakes to justify total control.
That plan unravels violently. As Merlin becomes consumed by power, members of the Librarians team appear to die one by one, and his supposedly perfect version of Camelot collapses into the very tragedy he claimed he was trying to prevent. It’s only after this catastrophic unraveling that the episode reveals its true twist.
None of it actually happened. The Librarians never traveled back to Camelot at all, instead trapping Merlin inside a dream state using his own tactics against him, staging the entire nightmare scenario to force him to confront exactly what his obsession would cost if left unchecked. The horrifying events audiences just watched were essentially a magical intervention rather than an altered timeline.
Series creator Dean Devlin confirmed as much in a post-finale conversation, explaining that Merlin’s arc was always designed as a redemption story built around hitting rock bottom before any real change could happen. Monaghan echoed that sentiment while discussing the character’s emotional journey, describing the experience as genuinely humbling for someone who had never shown much humanity before.
“I think that’s the real humbling moment for Merlin because you don’t see a massive amount of humanity in him. You see someone desperate for power, desperate to be the leader, to be the person who’s making the decisions,” Monaghan told TV Insider, breaking down why the moment lands as more than just a defeat. “But then, when he realizes at the end that the Librarians have kind of tricked him, but they’ve also saved him as well, I think it’s a very humbling experience for him.”
Once Merlin wakes from the spell and understands what the team did, the Librarians face a choice about how to handle him going forward. Rather than imprisoning him or neutralizing the threat permanently, the Library instead gives Merlin a new role: categorizing and preserving its collection of magical artifacts, with Excalibur standing watch to keep him in check.
It’s not full freedom, but it isn’t pure punishment either, leaving Merlin in a position to potentially return if the show continues. Despite involving Camelot, apparent character deaths and a total historical rewrite, the finale wraps up Season 2 with a surprisingly complete ending rather than a dangling cliffhanger, resolving Merlin’s arc while still leaving the door open for future stories.
As of now, TNT has not officially renewed ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ for a third season, though Devlin has expressed enthusiasm about continuing the story if given the chance, including potentially bringing back more familiar faces from across the wider franchise. Monaghan has also signaled interest in reprising Merlin, whose redemption arc and new library position leave plenty of room for him to resurface as an ally rather than a threat.
With its central antagonist neutralized and the team ready for whatever comes through the Annex door next, ‘The Librarians: The Next Chapter’ closes out Season 2 on solid footing while clearly hoping for more chapters to come.
