‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Universe Expands With Cobie Smulders-Led Spinoff Fast-Tracked at Netflix

‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ has spent four seasons building one of Netflix’s most reliable legal dramas, adapting Michael Connelly’s novels into a steady procedural hit anchored by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s Mickey Haller. That steady run took a bittersweet turn back in May, when Netflix confirmed the show’s upcoming fifth season would also be its last.

That ending, though, isn’t quite the end of the story. Chatter about expanding the franchise began percolating even before the final-season announcement, with the show’s own executive producers quietly developing an idea that could keep the world of Mickey Haller alive well beyond Season 5.

That idea has now become official. According to Deadline, Netflix is fast-tracking development on a spinoff series headlined by Cobie Smulders, who will reprise her role as Mickey Haller’s previously unknown half-sister, Artemisia “Emi” Finch. The script is being written by ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ executive producers Ted Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez, and Matthew J. Lieberman, with A+E Studios producing.

Smulders first introduced the character of Emi in the Season 4 finale, a moment that immediately caught fans’ attention given how little was previously known about Mickey’s extended family. She has since been promoted to a series regular for the show’s fifth and final season, where her arrival upends Mickey’s world entirely as she asks him to help free a woman she believes was wrongfully convicted.

According to the report, Humphrey, Rodriguez, and Lieberman spent considerable time refining the spinoff concept before pitching it directly to Netflix. The streamer reportedly responded enthusiastically, buying the project in the room and commissioning a script for a quick turnaround, a rare vote of confidence for a character who has barely appeared on screen so far.

Should the project move forward, the plan is to film in Los Angeles, mirroring the flagship series’ production approach, provided the spinoff qualifies for a California tax credit. A greenlight is reportedly contingent on closing deals with all key creative and talent parties involved, meaning the project remains in early stages despite the fast-moving momentum behind it.

Emi occupies a notably unique role within the franchise’s broader universe. Unlike most major characters in the show, she’s an original creation who doesn’t appear anywhere in Connelly’s source novels, having been introduced specifically to fill a gap in Mickey’s family dynamic left by the absence of his half-brother, Harry Bosch, whose own character rights belong to Amazon’s competing ‘Bosch’ series.

Executive producer Ted Humphrey has previously addressed comparisons between Emi’s introduction and the show’s inability to use Bosch, telling TV Insider that while there are obvious parallels in some ways, the goal was always to expand the world of Mickey’s family and introduce a compelling new character who could stand entirely on her own.

With Bosch having already headlined his own successful spinoff series on Prime Video, giving Mickey’s newly discovered sister a similar showcase on Netflix creates a kind of symmetry between the two competing platforms, each now home to a different branch of the same fictional family tree.

For fans who’ve grown attached to the world Connelly built, a Smulders-led spinoff offers a way to keep exploring that universe even after Mickey Haller’s own story wraps up.
