‘The Love Hypothesis’ Star Lili Reinhart Wants Hollywood to Make a Lesbian Vampire Movie, and She’s Already Working on It

Lili Reinhart has spent the past week doing what press tours are for: turning heads, sparking debates and getting fans talking. She has been everywhere promoting her new rom-com, but one throwaway answer in a radio interview has ended up generating more buzz than most of the headlines. It turns out the actress has a very different kind of project in mind.

Reinhart stars in and executive produces ‘The Love Hypothesis’, the Prime Video adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, which began as Star Wars fan fiction. The film, directed by Claire Scanlon and co-starring Tom Bateman, arrived on September 23. It has since drawn strong reactions from book fans, with some upset about cut scenes, and Reinhart has defended the changes by pointing out that a 300-400 page book had to fit into 112 minutes.

During that promotional run, she sat down with Hits Radio, and the conversation took an unexpected turn. Asked by the producer whether there is a specific book she would like to see adapted in the future, Reinhart revealed that she is trying to get a novella about lesbian vampires adapted for the screen. She said people are too afraid to make it, and she made a direct appeal to anyone at a studio watching, saying she doesn’t understand why it wouldn’t be made in this day and age. She added that it is exactly what she is trying to do.

She didn’t name the book, which is why the internet immediately started guessing. Many fans jumped to Carmilla, the 1872 Gothic novella by Sheridan Le Fanu, which has been adapted or reimagined numerous times, including a web series in 2015 and a film in 2019. GO Magazine noted that Carmilla isn’t the only lesbian vampire novella out there, so it is just as possible she is referring to an entirely different story.

Carmilla certainly has a long screen history. Hammer Film Productions’ Karnstein Trilogy, loosely adapted from it, included ‘The Vampire Lovers’ in 1970, ‘Lust for a Vampire’ and ‘Twins of Evil’ in 1971. Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint even published the comic ‘Carmilla: The First Vampire’ in 2023.

Whatever the source, fans are already on board. One YouTube commenter said they need the lesbian vampires movie as soon as possible, and the clip spread widely on X.

The comment carries weight because Reinhart isn’t only an actor. She has executive produced ‘Chemical Hearts’, which was based on Krystal Sutherland’s novel ‘Our Chemical Hearts’, as well as ‘Look Both Ways’, ‘American Sweatshop’ and ‘Hal & Harper’. She won the Best Actress prize at Series Mania for ‘Hal & Harper’, which she also produced.

Her approach to book adaptations is well established. She has said she pushed for certain lines and moments from ‘The Love Hypothesis’ to be included after joining the project, based on her research into what readers wanted. When she was first attached, she posted a TikTok from a bookstore saying she was looking for a book that could be turned into a really good rom-com that she could possibly lead.

Reinhart is riding a wave of visibility. The rom-com press tour, which included outfits recreating looks from films like ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ and ‘Uptown Girls’, has kept her in the spotlight, and the film is part of Prime Video’s growing lineup of book adaptations. That lineup includes ‘Off Campus’, ‘Maxton Hall’, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ and ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’.

That success may be the argument she is quietly making. Audiences have shown they will show up for book-based stories with devoted fandoms, and vampires have been enjoying a resurgence in fiction, including queer takes on the genre. A dark, romantic vampire story would be a sharp pivot from rom-com territory, but it fits her stated taste for stories that feel different.
