The Mandalorian and Grogu Are Coming Back to What Fans Loved Most, Says Brendan Wayne
One of the stars of the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, has given fans a hopeful message about what to expect from the film. Brendan Wayne, who has played Din Djarin on screen, said the movie will focus on what made the original show so popular, the close bond and adventures of Din and Grogu.
Since the Star Wars sequel trilogy ended with mixed reactions, The Mandalorian has been a bright spot for fans. The series started a fresh new era in the Star Wars universe and created a popular sub-franchise.
Now, the new film will bring Star Wars back to theaters after seven years. It picks up right where Season 3 of The Mandalorian left off. Din Djarin has officially adopted Grogu, and the two are making a life on Nevarro while working as bounty hunters for the New Republic.
Even though Season 3 ended on a sweet note, it was the most criticized season yet. Fans didn’t like that Din and Grogu’s reunion happened off-screen, and many thought the show lost focus on their relationship. Some episodes felt out of place, like “The Convert” and “Guns For Hire.” But Brendan Wayne has reassured fans that the movie will bring things back to the heart of the story.
In an interview with Rebel Force Radio, Wayne said, “I think we go to the storytelling originally that we loved with Mando… We’re with the kid and Mando quite a bit, and their journey is forefront.”
The Mandalorian and Grogu is directed by Jon Favreau and co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni. The movie is produced by Lucasfilm and will be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
It continues the story from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (2019–2023). Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, with Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Jonny Coyne joining the cast.
Originally, a fourth season of The Mandalorian was planned and written by early 2023. However, production was delayed due to the Hollywood labor strikes that year. During the delay, Lucasfilm decided to shift focus from the fourth season to making a movie instead. The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced in January 2024, filmed in California from September to December 2024, and is set to release in the U.S. on May 22, 2026.
The film will feature Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter living on the galaxy’s outer edges. Grogu, his young ward, is an infant of Yoda’s species brought to life through a mix of puppetry, animatronics, and special effects.
Sigourney Weaver plays Ward, a New Republic colonel and veteran pilot. Jeremy Allen White will play Rotta the Hutt, the son of the infamous Jabba the Hutt. Jonny Coyne takes on the role of an Imperial Warlord leading a group of Empire remnants.
Fans will also see characters from the animated series Star Wars Rebels, including Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, and members of the Anzellan species will appear too.
This new film promises to bring the focus back to what fans loved most about The Mandalorian: the strong relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu and their exciting journey together.
