‘The Odyssey’ Star Matt Damon Gushes Over Charlize Theron’s Beauty, Calls Her a “Genetic Lottery” Winner
Matt Damon has spoken openly about Charlize Theron and praised both her talent and how she has aged over the years. He said he believes she has “won the genetic lottery” because she still looks very similar to how she did decades ago.
The comments came during an interview with ELLE magazine, where Damon talked about their long history of working together. The two actors first appeared on screen together 26 years ago in the 2000 film The Legend of Bagger Vance. Now, they are working together again on Sir Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey.
Damon explained that seeing Theron again after so many years made him reflect on how little she has changed. He joked about it during the interview, saying, “I don’t know why only one of us aged. She won the genetic lottery.”
His comment quickly spread online after being published by ELLE magazine, which is the source of the interview. Fans reacted to both the humor and the admiration in his words.
Damon also spoke seriously about Theron as a person and as an actress. He described her as someone he has always supported and respected. He said, “She’s somebody I’ve always really rooted for because if you know her, it’s impossible not to root for her. She’s just a formidable woman and a great, great actress.”
The two actors are currently filming The Odyssey, and Damon also shared details about the difficult shooting conditions. According to him, parts of the film were shot in Morocco, where the cast had to work on a windy beach with very harsh weather.
He described how strong the conditions were and how Theron handled them during production. Damon said that the wind was extremely intense and made filming very uncomfortable for everyone involved. He explained, “She had to do these scenes that were already challenging with a 30- to 40-mile-an-hour wind ripping sand into her eyes,” referring to Theron’s experience on set.
Despite the difficult environment, Damon said Theron continued working without complaining. He praised her professionalism and said she pushed through the discomfort while still delivering her performance. He added, “She’s just a boss, though. The grips were trying to hold screens over, anything that we could do so that we could shoot. But even with all that stuff, she was in massive discomfort, and you wouldn’t know it from seeing the movie.”
He went on to explain that Theron rarely complains on set. According to Damon, she only spoke up when the conditions became impossible to handle. He said, “I’ve known her for so long, and she is one of those people who won’t complain, ever. And so, when she finally had to say: ‘I literally – I’m so sorry, I can’t keep my eyes open,’ she was angry.”
Damon added that even in that moment, he felt she was being too hard on herself. He said, “I think that was probably tougher on her than anything. And I’m like: ‘Charlize, no human being could keep their eyes open, this is ridiculous. Why didn’t you say something earlier?’ That’s her. She is seriously tough,” he said.
The interview has drawn attention not just because of Damon’s praise, but also because it highlights the long working relationship between the two actors and the difficult conditions of their new film. ELLE magazine’s interview shows a more personal side of Damon’s views on Theron, mixing humor, respect, and admiration in his comments.
