When Denzel Washington was still new to acting and trying to find steady work, for Black actors in the early 1980s, opportunities were scarce, and television often offered more chances than film.

Washington considered TV guest roles but was careful about the projects he chose. His agent even advised him to avoid certain sitcoms so he wouldn’t get typecast.

Reflecting on those early days, Washington once told Entertainment Weekly: “I remember early on my agent talked to me about not getting caught up in television. She convinced me not to do The Jeffersons, which I’d read for.”

Eventually, he accepted a role on NBC’s hospital drama St. Elsewhere. The series, which ran from 1982 to 1988, followed doctors and interns at a struggling Boston hospital. It became known for its realistic storytelling, ensemble cast, and ongoing storylines that connected episodes in ways most shows didn’t at the time.

Though St. Elsewhere never dominated TV ratings, it built a loyal fan base, especially among younger audiences.

More importantly, it won critical acclaim. The series picked up 24 awards during its six-season run, including 13 Primetime Emmys for acting, writing, and directing. Cast members like William Daniels, Ed Flanders, and Bonnie Bartlett earned top honors. The show also collected a Peabody Award and was once named Favorite New Drama at the People’s Choice Awards.

For Washington, the show became his one and only TV series role. It opened the door to his film career, proving he could hold his own among an ensemble of strong actors while standing out with his intensity and presence. From there, he moved on to films that cemented him as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

It’s fascinating that Denzel Washington only acted in one TV series, and it turned out to be a show that made television history. It shows how one smart career choice can change everything.

He could’ve gone down a completely different path if he had stuck to stage work or taken smaller TV roles. What do you think? Did St. Elsewhere set him up for his movie career, or would he have made it big anyway? Share your thoughts in the comments.
