The Original Cast of “Malcolm in the Middle” Reunites at Reboot Premiere 20 Years Later
The Malcolm in the Middle revival is bringing the chaotic family back, and not much has changed, even after 20 years. The new project, titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” will stream on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ starting April 10. The story follows Malcolm as an adult, but his life quickly falls apart once he is pulled back into his family’s world.
The new series picks up with Malcolm trying to live a stable and quiet life away from his parents and siblings. He now has a girlfriend named Tristan and a daughter named Leah. For a while, things seem under control. But everything changes when his parents, Hal and Lois, plan a big celebration for their 40th wedding anniversary. That event brings the entire family back together, and it forces Malcolm’s new life to collide with his old one.
Most of the original cast from the Fox series is returning. Frankie Muniz is back as Malcolm, still dealing with the same frustrations, just older. Bryan Cranston returns as Hal, and Jane Kaczmarek is back as Lois. Their dynamic looks just as intense as before. Christopher Masterson also returns as Francis, who is still married to Piama, played by Emy Coligado. Justin Berfield is back as Reese, who hasn’t changed much in personality.

In the trailer, Reese jokes about Malcolm, saying, “I think we all knew Malcolm would eventually betray us.” The show keeps that same tone of humor that fans remember.
However, not everyone from the original cast has returned in the same way. The character of Dewey is now played by a new actor, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. The original actor, Erik Per Sullivan, chose not to come back. According to series creator Linwood Boomer, this decision was personal.
“Eric Sullivan hasn’t been an actor for decades. I asked him to repeat [Dewey]. We still talk all the time. I love him, and he didn’t want to be an actor anymore,” Boomer told USA TODAY. “He didn’t like [acting] 10 years ago, and he sure doesn’t now. I had to respect that.”
Boomer also explained that Sullivan supported the recasting choice. “Please just recast it. It’s fine.” The team then chose Ellsworth-Clark, who Boomer believes fits the role well. “He also really inhabits Dewey in a way that seems very believable. It really felt like this is how Dewey would be 20 years later.”
Another change involves Jamie, the younger brother introduced later in the original show. The role is now played by Anthony Timpano. On top of that, the family has grown even more. Hal and Lois now have another child named Kelly, played by Vaughan Murrae.
The revival keeps the same idea at its core. Malcolm may have tried to move on, but his family still pulls him back into chaos. The mix of returning actors and new faces gives the show a mix of nostalgia and something fresh.

This revival looks like it understands what made the original show work. It doesn’t try to change the formula too much, but it still adds new elements to keep things interesting. Bringing back most of the cast helps a lot, and the changes seem reasonable. It will really depend on how well the new story connects with both old fans and new viewers.
