‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ Star Jon Bernthal Reveals He “Almost Killed a Man” Just Before His Major Breakthrough
Jon Bernthal is now one of the most recognisable actors in Hollywood, known for intense roles in The Punisher, The Bear, The Walking Dead, and a long list of films over the past decade. But before his rise to fame, he went through a serious personal turning point that nearly changed the course of his life completely.
According to past interviews, Bernthal has spoken openly about a violent incident in 2009, just one year before he landed his breakout role in The Walking Dead. At the time, he was still struggling to build his acting career and dealing with a rough personal lifestyle marked by aggression and run-ins with the law.
The incident happened while Bernthal was walking his dog. A confrontation with another man escalated quickly after the man interacted with the dog. Bernthal said the situation turned into a fight, and he punched the man, knocking him unconscious. Police were called, and Bernthal was arrested.
He later explained that the moment was terrifying and made him think about what could have happened if things had gone worse. In an interview with Esquire in 2018, he reflected on how close the situation came to changing everything.
“I knew if he didn’t wake up, I was going to jail and my worst side would take over,” Bernthal said.
He also said he made a personal promise to change his life if the man recovered.
“I prayed to whatever is above that if he woke up, I’d change things, get married, have kids, and stop with the anger,” he said.
The man did wake up, and Bernthal later received probation for the incident. He has said that this period of his life became a major turning point. It pushed him to rethink his behaviour, get sober, and focus more seriously on acting.
Soon after, his career began to shift. In 2010, he was cast as Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead. The role became his breakout moment and introduced him to a global audience. Shane was a complex character, a former friend of Rick Grimes whose moral breakdown made him one of the most talked-about figures in the early seasons of the show.
From there, Bernthal’s career grew steadily. He appeared in films like The Wolf of Wall Street, Fury, and Sicario, often playing intense or gritty characters. His performance style, known for emotional and physical intensity, made him stand out in both TV and film.
Later, he became widely recognised as Frank Castle in Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix. The role led to his own spin-off show, The Punisher, where he played a former Marine driven by revenge after the loss of his family. The character became one of Marvel’s most popular darker anti-heroes.
More recently, Bernthal has continued to expand his range. He appeared in The Bear, where he showed a softer but still emotionally heavy performance, and has taken on more film roles across different genres.
Looking back, Bernthal has described that difficult period before fame as something that forced him to change direction. What happened in 2009 became a line he did not want to cross again, and it ended up shaping both his personal life and his acting career in a lasting way.
