Despite some backlash from fans, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has become a hit on Amazon. The second season’s three-episode debut on August 29, 2024, kicked off its weekly release, and both fans and critics agree that this season is a notable improvement over the first.

Initial reports suggested that the series was losing viewers—news that pleased some detractors—but Amazon later confirmed that the second season is actually attracting more viewers, much to the delight of true The Lord of the Rings enthusiasts.

We now have the latest data from the first week of the season’s broadcast, which shows the series achieving a strong position on the weekly charts, further exciting its loyal fanbase.

According to our earlier report, Samba TV’s incomplete data showed that 902,000 households watched the premiere of The Rings of Power Season 2, marking a notable decline from the first season. However, this somber news was later countered by a memo from Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios. The memo revealed that Season 2 is performing far better than initially indicated, with the series drawing 40 million viewers over 11 days, averaging about 3.6 million viewers per day—much higher than Samba TV’s initial figures suggested.

We’ve seen an impressive amount of our Rings of Power customers coming from outside of the U.S., which is a testament to the show’s resonance with global audiences and the remarkable growth of Prime Video customers worldwide.

We can now confirm that the series is not only performing exceptionally well but also ranked as the second most-watched show from August 30 to September 5. This is especially impressive given that the show premiered during that week after a lengthy hiatus. It’s typical for shows to experience a drop in viewership between seasons, particularly after a long break, so the series’ strong performance is definitely encouraging.

Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever topped the charts, which is expected as new shows often attract more viewers initially. Additionally, Netflix’s larger subscriber base compared to Amazon Prime also plays a role.

The Rings of Power Season 2 amassed an impressive 764.7 million minutes watched, a commendable achievement. However, there’s potential for even greater success, which is certainly what Amazon will be aiming for.
