The Russo Brothers Are Open to a Steve Rogers Movie About the Infinity Stones

Few endings in modern blockbuster history have generated as much lingering debate as the final moments of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Steve Rogers stepped onto the quantum platform to return the 6 Infinity Stones to their exact points in history, then vanished from the story entirely. Audiences only caught back up with him as an elderly man handing his shield to Sam Wilson.

Everything about that solo mission, the danger, the logistics, the emotional weight of traveling alone across the timeline, happened entirely off-screen. It has remained one of the most requested untold stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since the film’s 2019 release.

Now, more than 7 years later, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have finally addressed the idea directly. Speaking with CBR, Joe Russo was asked whether Steve Rogers should get a self-contained story about returning the stones, and he replied without hesitation: “I think that’s a great idea. How about a movie?”

The brothers revealed that the concept had actually crossed their minds while making ‘Endgame’ itself, specifically around Steve’s encounter with the Red Skull on Vormir. Joe Russo explained, “We did have that conversation. There might have even been… I think we toyed around with an idea of like, ‘Is there a montage where he puts the stones back?’ We felt like it just played past the ending.”

Ultimately, the scale of the idea was the problem. “It seems like much more complicated than a montage could sustain,” Joe said. “And so we didn’t do it.” Anthony Russo backed that up, adding, “We did circle it for a long time, that idea.”

The brothers’ comments confirm something fans have suspected for years: the mission was compelling enough to tempt the filmmakers more than once. Given how directly it touches Steve’s history with the Red Skull and the Infinity Stones themselves, it is easy to see why the idea kept resurfacing in their conversations.

That history is becoming newly relevant again. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ left Steve’s choice to stay in the past with Peggy Carter unresolved in terms of consequences, and that decision is now central to the current storyline. The extended ending shown in ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’ has Loki cross paths with Steve and Peggy, a moment tied directly into the plot of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Chris Evans is set to return as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which arrives in theaters on Dec. 18. A teaser confirmed the character is back in the past, now married to Peggy Carter and holding a newborn baby, well before the elderly version audiences saw at the end of ‘Endgame’.

Anthony Russo has described the choice to revisit that ending as deliberate. “We really thought about that ending [in Endgame] as the perfect ending for Steve Rogers,” he told Empire, “and the idea of just going one moment past that perfect ending, and thinking about how radically that moment can change by just taking one step past it… That was a big part of the delight in the new idea for what Doomsday is and where the story goes.”

Nothing has been officially announced, and the Russo Brothers still have ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ to finish first, with that film scheduled for Dec. 17, 2027. But their openness to the idea, paired with their clear enthusiasm for working with Evans again, has fans speculating about what could come after.

The pairing makes sense on paper. The Russos launched much of their MCU career directing Captain America films, including ‘The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Civil War’, so returning to that character for one more adventure would bring things full circle.

Steve’s decision to remain in the past with Peggy has already created ripple effects that Marvel is using to build out ‘Doomsday’ and the wider Multiverse Saga. A film explaining exactly how he navigated returning the stones, and what he encountered along the way, would fill in one of the MCU’s most significant remaining gaps.

Whether or not Marvel greenlights it, the fact that the Russo Brothers are finally willing to talk about it, and seem genuinely enthusiastic, suggests this idea is far from dead. For a story fans have wanted since 2019, “How about a movie?” might be the best answer they could have hoped for.
