‘The Shards’ Episode 3 Release Date: When “Help Me! Rhonda!” Drops on FX and Hulu
Ryan Murphy’s latest true-crime-tinged thriller The Shards has already made waves with its double-episode premiere, and fans hooked on the mystery of the Trawler are counting down to what happens next. The FX series, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s semi-autobiographical novel, dropped its first two hours together, setting a pattern for how the rest of the season will roll out.
Set in 1981 Los Angeles, ‘The Shards’ follows a fictionalized teenage version of Ellis navigating his senior year at the elite Buckley prep school while a serial killer targets teenagers across the city. The arrival of mysterious new student Robert Mallory has already thrown Bret’s world into chaos, and viewers are eager to see where that tension goes.
‘The Shards’ Episode 3, titled “Help Me! Rhonda!”, premieres on FX and Hulu on August 12, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET, continuing the show’s weekly Wednesday release pattern that began with the two-episode premiere on August 5. Unlike that opening night, which paired two episodes together, Episode 3 arrives as a single installment before the series returns to double drops later in the season.
The season’s release strategy mixes single and double episode weeks across its full nine-episode run. According to the confirmed schedule, Episode 4, “Robert’s Party,” also arrives on August 12 alongside Episode 3, while Episode 5, “Murder on the Dancefloor,” airs solo on August 19, and Episodes 6 and 7, “Homecoming Part One” and “Homecoming Part Two,” pair up again on August 26.
The nine episodes will be released across six Wednesdays, with the premiere, the August 12 drop, and the August 26 drop each containing two episodes, while the remaining three dates each feature a single episode. That structure means viewers won’t be waiting the same length of time between every installment, with some weeks delivering double the story and others slowing the pace back down.
For viewers in the UK watching on Disney+, the schedule runs on a similar weekly cadence, though dated a day later than the US release. Episodes are expected to become available from around 2 a.m. BST, matching the 9 p.m. ET FX and Hulu release in the US, with the season finale confirmed for Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Beyond the Trawler’s escalating body count, Episode 3’s synopsis teases fresh chaos for Bret’s already tight-knit friend group. Official details describe “a beloved student’s sudden disappearance” causing chaos for the senior class, a direct follow-up to the Matt Kellner subplot introduced in Episode 2.
Much of the online conversation since the premiere has centered on whether Robert, played by Homer Gere, is secretly connected to the killings terrorizing Buckley’s student body. Bret’s growing suspicion of his new friend has become the emotional engine of the series, and Episode 3 looks poised to escalate that paranoia even further as the missing-persons plot widens.
Behind the scenes, the creative team has hinted the story could extend well past this one book adaptation if audiences respond well. Executive producer Brad Simpson told Radio Times in July that the show is “certainly set up to continue on through their senior year,” suggesting a second season isn’t off the table depending on how the current run performs.
With the Trawler’s identity still very much a mystery and a death cult called the Riders of the Afterlife lurking in the background as a possible red herring, ‘The Shards’ has plenty of threads to pull as it heads into its third hour.
