Nearly two decades of “will they or won’t they” speculation is finally paying off for ‘The Simpsons’ fans. What started as an offhand chalkboard gag back in 2007 has slowly evolved into a genuine, in-production sequel, and this week brought fans another concrete piece of the puzzle.

The wait has been a long one by any measure. Fox and later Disney spent years fielding questions about whether Springfield’s first family would ever return to theaters, with producers occasionally teasing the idea without ever committing to specifics.

That uncertainty officially ended when 20th Century Studios revealed the sequel’s title at its D23 pavilion this week: ‘The New Simpsons Movie.’ The reveal came via signage at the studio’s convention presence, giving fans their first confirmed look at what the long-awaited follow-up will actually be called.

The idea for a sequel has technically been floating around since the original 2007 film hit theaters. The chalkboard gag opening the show’s first post-movie episode read “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie,” a joke that eventually became an eerily accurate prediction once Disney confirmed the sequel was actually happening.

Talk of a follow-up picked up steam gradually over the years, with ‘Simpsons’ producer Al Jean confirming discussions with Disney as far back as 2019, though those conversations reportedly stalled during the pandemic. It wasn’t until September 2025 that 20th Century Studios made things official, announcing the sequel alongside a poster featuring Homer reaching for a pink-frosted donut and the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

That initial announcement set the film for a July 23, 2027 release, positioning it almost exactly twenty years after the original’s July 2007 debut. The date also came with an unexpected side effect for Marvel fans, since the sequel took over a release slot previously held by an untitled Marvel Studios project.

Since that original announcement, the film’s release date has quietly moved. ‘The New Simpsons Movie’ is now set to open in theaters on September 3, marking a shift from its original summer window to the Labor Day holiday weekend instead.

20th Century Studios confirmed the change through its official Instagram account, sharing an image of Homer accidentally stabbing his own foot with a makeshift flag bearing the new release date, captioned with a note about the film arriving during “Labor D’OH Weekend.” Fan reaction to the delay was mixed, with some expressing mild disappointment over the extra wait while others simply leaned into the joke of it all.

The original ‘Simpsons Movie’ remains a benchmark the sequel will have plenty to live up to, having grossed more than $536 million worldwide against a modest $75 million budget back in 2007. That film saw Homer accidentally pollute Springfield’s water supply, triggering a massive dome being placed over the entire town by the EPA.

Plot details for the sequel remain completely under wraps for now, and the D23 reveal focused entirely on branding rather than story specifics. Still, with a confirmed title, a locked release date, and ‘The Simpsons’ now renewed through a 40th season on television, the franchise’s big-screen return finally feels like a genuine certainty rather than another round of speculation.
