‘The Smashing Machine’ Trailer Drops After Venice Premiere Starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are starring in The Smashing Machine, a new sports drama about the life of former amateur wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr. A new trailer for the movie has just been released, giving fans a glimpse of the intense story ahead.
The film is written, directed, co-produced, and edited by Benny Safdie. Johnson plays Kerr, while Blunt portrays his wife at the time, Dawn Staples. The movie also features appearances from real MMA fighters like Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk.
The Smashing Machine premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 1, where Benny Safdie won the Silver Lion for Best Director. The movie was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, and it will open in theaters across the United States and Canada on October 3.
Filming took place from May to August 2024 in locations including New Mexico, Tokyo, and Vancouver. Belgian musician Nala Sinephro composed the score, adding an original musical touch to the film.
The trailer highlights both the physical and emotional challenges Kerr faced in his career. It shows Johnson portraying the intensity of professional fighting and the personal struggles behind the public persona.
Critics have already responded positively, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting 82% of 34 reviews as favorable and Metacritic giving a score of 75 out of 100.
