Sony Pictures has officially announced the sequel to The Social Network. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the first film, will return to write and direct the follow-up, now titled The Social Reckoning.

The movie is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2026, during the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday weekend.

The main cast has also been confirmed, following initial reports from Deadline’s Justin Kroll. Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong will take on the role of Mark Zuckerberg.

Mikey Madison, an Oscar winner, will play whistleblower Frances Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White, known for his Golden Globe and Emmy wins, will portray Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz, who reported on the β€œFacebook Files.” The series of articles revealed the inner workings of Facebook and some of the issues linked to the company. Comedian and actor Bill Burr will also star.

The movie will be produced by Todd Black, Peter Rice, Aaron Sorkin, and Stuart Besser. Its release will compete with Universal and Blumhouse’s Other Mommy and Paramount Animation’s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

The first Social Network, directed by David Fincher and written by Sorkin, was released in 2010. Based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, it told the story of Facebook’s creation.

Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, Justin Timberlake, and Max Minghella rounded out the cast. The movie earned critical and commercial success, grossing over $224 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.

β€œThe Social Network” was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and won three: Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin, Best Original Score for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and Best Film Editing.

It also earned multiple Golden Globe Awards and has remained highly regarded, often ranked among the best films of the 2010s and one of the most significant films of the 21st century. In 2024, it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry.

The sequel, The Social Reckoning, will continue exploring Facebook and its impact, focusing on whistleblowers and journalists who exposed the company’s inner workings. With Sorkin returning as both writer and director, fans can expect the same sharp storytelling and dramatic style that made the first movie so successful.
