‘The Wheel of Time’ Showrunner Says Season 4 Will Be Very Different — If It Happens

Fans of The Wheel of Time are still waiting to hear if the fantasy series will return for a fourth season. Season 3 ended on April 17 with a big finale called “He Who Comes with the Dawn,” but Amazon has not officially renewed the show yet. Still, showrunner Rafe Judkins is already talking about what might come next, and says Season 4 would feel very different.
In a new interview, Judkins shared his hopes for the show’s future and explained why it’s so important for The Wheel of Time to continue: “That is the same thing that I’ve been sort of asking Amazon — what is the end game for the show? I really want to deliver this full series, so how do we best do that?” he said.
Judkins talked about why the team chose Amazon in the first place. He said they had other options when they were first selling the show, but Amazon felt like the right fit. “I think one reason we went with Amazon… is that Amazon felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term. There are not a lot of places doing that anymore.”
Judkins believes The Wheel of Time needs time to grow and tell the whole story. He pointed out that the book series by Robert Jordan, which the show is based on, gets better over time, and he thinks the show is doing the same.
“For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave.”
He also spoke about how the world of TV is changing. Many shows today are made quickly and don’t last very long. But Judkins says The Wheel of Time needs to be different. He believes long stories and character journeys are what make TV special.
“Television’s moving in a direction where things just come in, splash and leave. But the history of television is that its strength is longform storytelling… That’s where television has its strength. That’s where it’s better than movies, at telling those kinds of stories.”
Judkins hopes the show will get the chance to finish the full story. He believes that’s what The Wheel of Time, and television as a whole, deserves.
“I’m hopeful for our industry that shows like Wheel of Time do get to tell the whole story. I think it’s important for television. It’s what we do best, and so we should be finishing these stories.”
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Season 4 becomes a reality. But if it does, it sounds like it could be something truly new and exciting.
