‘The Whisper Man’ Just Proved Robert De Niro Doesn’t Need Great Reviews to Dominate Netflix
Netflix has had a busy year churning out star-studded thrillers designed to grab immediate attention, and its latest crime drama arrived with about as much pedigree as the streamer can muster. Produced by the Russo brothers’ AGBO banner, ‘The Whisper Man’ brings together an ensemble that includes Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott and Michael Keaton, the kind of lineup usually reserved for prestige theatrical releases rather than a streaming drop.
Based on Alex North’s bestselling novel of the same name, the film follows a widowed crime writer whose young son goes missing shortly after they relocate to a small town once terrorized by a serial killer known as the Whisper Man. Desperate for answers, he turns to his estranged father, a retired detective who originally put the killer away, forcing the older man back into a case he thought he’d closed for good.
Since landing on the platform, ‘The Whisper Man‘ has quickly become one of Netflix’s biggest hits of the moment, climbing to the very top of the streamer’s movie charts worldwide. That success comes despite a distinctly mixed critical reception, with the film currently sitting at a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that places it firmly in “rotten” territory even as audiences flock to watch it.
The disconnect between viewership and reviews isn’t unusual for Netflix’s mid-budget genre offerings, but it’s still notable given the star power involved. De Niro headlines as retired Detective Inspector Pete Willis, with Monaghan playing Detective Amanda Beck and Scott portraying Tom Kennedy, the grieving father at the center of the mystery. Keaton rounds out the main cast as Frank Carter, the original Whisper Man now sitting behind bars.
Critics have generally credited the ensemble for elevating material that otherwise leans on familiar genre beats. Several reviews have pointed to the film’s atmosphere and performances as its strongest assets, even while describing the central mystery as predictable or lacking the tension of stronger entries in the serial-killer thriller genre.
Behind the scenes, the film offered a rare pairing for two Hollywood veterans who’d never actually shared a scene despite both appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Jackie Brown’ decades earlier. Monaghan described watching De Niro and Keaton face off on set as a standout moment of the shoot, saying the confrontation between the two actors was “an amazing thing to behold.”
“My character got to listen a lot that day,” Monaghan said, recalling the shoot in an interview with Tudum. “I got to watch them work together, and it was an amazing thing to behold. That was a really special day.”
That kind of star chemistry appears to be resonating with subscribers, even if critics remain split. Per tracking site FlixPatrol, ‘The Whisper Man’ has held the number-one spot on Netflix’s U.S. movie chart while ranking near the top of the platform’s global list, only trailing a short-form Grand Theft Auto VI preview that technically doesn’t compete as a traditional feature film.
The film also continues a strong stretch for Netflix’s original movie slate, which has leaned into starry mid-budget thrillers as a reliable way to draw viewers between bigger tentpole releases. Whether ‘The Whisper Man’ maintains its chart dominance in the coming days remains to be seen, but its opening numbers suggest star power and a chilling premise were more than enough to hook audiences, regardless of what critics had to say.
