Netflix fans had every reason to feel optimistic about “The Witcher’s” final chapter arriving on schedule this year. With filming wrapped since September 2025 and the show having been shot back-to-back with its fourth season, the streamer’s own January preview event confirmed the fifth and final season would land sometime in 2026, giving fans a rare sense of certainty after years of unpredictable gaps between installments.

That optimism has now taken a hit. According to reports, the fifth and final season is no longer expected to drop in 2026, with the streamer quietly scrubbing all mentions of the show from its previews for the year and the final outing to the Continent now expected sometime in 2027.

The signs of that shift had been building for a while before the official confirmation. Eagle-eyed fans reportedly noticed the season had been removed from Netflix’s public-facing promotional websites and media center listings for 2026, despite the show having been featured prominently in press materials earlier in the year as part of the streamer’s Next on Netflix campaign.

Netflix has neither publicly confirmed this delay nor locked in a specific 2027 release window as of now, leaving the exact timing still somewhat uncertain. Still, the pattern of scrubbed promotional materials strongly suggests the shift is real, even without an official announcement from the streamer itself.

The delay comes despite production having wrapped well over a year ago. Season 5 finished filming in September 2025, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has confirmed being in post-production on the season for an extended stretch, meaning the extra time isn’t tied to any filming delays but rather the ongoing finishing work, including visual effects and ADR.

This final season carries significant weight for the franchise, adapting the last two novels in Andrzej Sapkowski’s original book series, “The Tower of the Swallow” and “The Lady of the Lake.” The story is expected to bring Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri together after years of painful separation, with the Continent teetering on the edge of total war as dark forces close in on Ciri and her powerful Elder Blood abilities.

Liam Hemsworth, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey, and Laurence Fishburne are all confirmed to return for the send-off, continuing the ensemble that’s carried the show through its post-Henry Cavill era. Hissrich has previously indicated the finale will honor the same ending laid out in Sapkowski’s books, giving longtime readers a sense of where the story is ultimately headed.

The show’s release pattern has historically followed roughly two-year gaps between seasons, with Season 1 arriving in 2019, Season 2 in 2021, Season 3 in 2023, and Season 4 finally landing in October 2025. A 2026 release for Season 5 would have marked a notable break from that pattern, making this pushback to 2027 feel like more of a return to the franchise’s usual, slower rhythm than a true surprise.

For fans who’ve stuck with “The Witcher” through cast changes and shifting timelines, a few more months likely won’t make or break their investment in seeing Ciri’s story reach its conclusion.
