Netflix has spent the past year proving that animated originals can go toe to toe with its biggest live-action blockbusters, and this summer’s family adventure has quietly become the latest example of that shift. What started as a modest May release has snowballed into one of the platform’s defining success stories of the year.

That momentum has been building for weeks, with the film steadily climbing the streamer’s weekly charts while insiders speculated about just how far its viewership could realistically go. This week, that speculation turned into an official milestone worth celebrating.

‘Swapped’ has officially entered Netflix’s All-Time Top 10 Most Popular English Language Films list, knocking the Russo Brothers’ ‘The Gray Man’ out of the tenth spot with 139.8 million views. The animated feature, produced by Netflix and Skydance Animation, arrived on the platform on May 1 and has spent the months since steadily building toward this exact milestone.

The achievement marks the first time two Netflix animated originals have simultaneously held spots on the platform’s most popular list, joining last year’s breakout hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ which remains the single most watched original title in Netflix history. That kind of company places ‘Swapped’ among a very small group of films that have managed to break through at this scale.

Director Nathan Greno reflected on the milestone in an exclusive statement provided to What’s on Netflix, explaining that animation has the power to connect with people in a uniquely deep way and that seeing audiences around the globe embrace the film has been truly rewarding.

The film follows Ollie, a pookoo, who unintentionally swaps bodies with Ivy, a javan, during a supernatural encounter, forcing the two former rivals to work together in order to break the spell and save their shared forest. Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple lead the voice cast as the two central characters, joined by Craig Robinson, Michelle Yeoh, John Lithgow, Awkwafina, Brian Tyree Henry and Olivia Colman.

Netflix bases its all-time rankings on total views accumulated during a film’s first 91 days of release, a window that closes for ‘Swapped’ on July 31. That means the film still has roughly ten additional days to keep climbing before its final placement on the chart becomes permanently locked in.

Early projections suggest there is still plenty of room for growth. With ‘War Machine’ sitting in ninth place at roughly 139.9 million views, ‘Swapped’ would need less than a million additional views to leapfrog it, and some estimates suggest the film could climb as high as eighth or even higher before its tracking window closes.

The milestone did not come as a total surprise to those following Netflix’s recent earnings commentary closely. Company co-CEO Ted Sarandos had already flagged the film’s strong performance during Netflix’s Q2 2026 earnings call, highlighting it as one of the platform’s biggest wins of the year and noting it was tracking to become the second biggest original animated film behind only ‘KPop Demon Hunters.’

With ‘Swapped’ now officially cementing its place among Netflix’s biggest hits ever, and with more animated releases like ‘Steps’ and Brad Bird’s ‘Ray Gunn’ still to come later this year, the streamer’s continued investment in original animation is clearly paying off in a major way.
