These Are The Only Superhero Films That Have Ever Taken Home an Oscar
Superhero movies have long dominated the box office, but their path to the Oscars has been slow and selective. For decades, Marvel and DC films were mostly recognized in technical categories like visual effects, makeup, and hairstyling. Lately, however, comic book movies have started earning broader recognition from the Academy. According to reports from the Academy archives, over ten superhero films have now received at least one Oscar.
The first comic book movie to score an Academy Award was 1977’s Superman, starring Christopher Reeve. The film took home the Oscar for visual effects, setting the stage for future superhero recognition. It wasn’t until 1989, with Tim Burton’s Batman, that another superhero film was honored, winning for Best Art Direction.
2005 marked a notable year for the genre. Spider-Man 2, starring Tobey Maguire, received an Oscar for visual effects, while Disney’s The Incredibles won for Best Animated Feature and sound editing. A major shift came with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2008. Heath Ledger’s legendary turn as the Joker earned him a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and the film also picked up recognition for sound editing.
Animated superhero films continued to impress the Academy. Big Hero 6, Disney’s Marvel adaptation, took home Best Animated Feature in 2015, while DC’s Suicide Squad was awarded for makeup and hairstyling a year later. 2019 became a historic year for the genre when Black Panther won three Oscars for music, costume, and production design, making it the first Marvel film to win multiple awards. That same year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse captured Best Animated Feature.
Live-action superhero acting recognition remained rare, but Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Joker changed that in 2020. Phoenix won Best Actor, and the film also received an award for original score, pushing the total number of superhero Oscar wins into double digits. Most recently, the Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever, earned the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2025, bringing the total number of Oscar-winning superhero films to eleven.
Even with these successes, the Academy still largely reserves superhero recognition for technical achievements. Only two actors from comic book movies have won acting awards, while animated adaptations remain the only superhero films to take home Best Feature Film recognition.
It’s impressive to see superhero films slowly gaining credibility at the Oscars, but the genre still faces barriers. Acting and Best Picture wins are still rare, which shows the Academy sees these films more as spectacle than as serious cinema. What do you think? Should superhero movies get more awards recognition, or is their spotlight best left on the visual side? Share your thoughts in the comments.
