Charlize Theron once filmed a very explicit scene with Ben Affleck for the 2000 thriller Reindeer Games, but it never made it into the final theatrical cut. The film, directed by John Frankenheimer, is a crime action story set around Christmas, although it was released in February.

The story follows Affleck’s character Rudy, a prisoner who takes on his dead cellmate’s identity after getting out of jail. That decision leads him to Ashley, played by Theron, who had been writing letters to his cellmate without ever meeting him in person. When they finally meet, things quickly turn into a romantic encounter.

According to interviews and behind-the-scenes comments reported from the film’s cast and crew, the original version of the scene between Theron and Affleck was much more explicit than what audiences saw. Affleck later explained that the cut was too extreme for an R-rated release.

He said, “My sex scene with Charlize Theron was too steamy. Sex is somehow seen as more scandalous than violence. Frankly, I think the opposite is true. So, yes, there was a much longer, racier, more erotic version of the scene. And it wasn’t like we were really having sex. I mean, I had a sock on!”

Despite the actors filming a more intense version, the MPAA ratings board pushed back on the content. Director John Frankenheimer also reportedly agreed that the footage was too explicit for the rating they were aiming for. Even an “unrated” version of the film did not include the full scene.

Theron herself has since spoken negatively about the movie overall. She has called Reindeer Games a bad experience and has not been shy about her opinion of the final result, even if she does not regret working with Frankenheimer. He passed away in July 2002, and the film ended up being his last feature.
