This Is the One Actor Who Left Michael Caine Speechless On Set Due To His Audacity
Michael Caine once shared a story about the one actor who actually left him starstruck: Marlon Brando. In an interview with Time Out and in his autobiography What’s It All About?, Caine recounted meeting Brando on the set of the 1966 western The Appaloosa, directed by Sidney Furie, who had also worked with Caine on The Ipcress File.
Caine recalled that Furie was “almost in tears with horror stories” about Brando’s behavior on set. Brando reportedly didn’t take Furie seriously, making the director’s job extremely difficult. Despite the tension, Caine went to the set and met Brando, who was sitting on a horse at the time.
“We said hello and then Brando asked me what I thought of Sidney as a director. I told him that I thought he was excellent, and Brando said, in front of Sidney, ‘I don’t think he can direct traffic,’” Caine wrote.
Realizing he was in the middle of one of Brando’s famous diva moments, Caine tried to lighten the mood: “It’s a western — there isn’t any traffic.” Brando laughed, and the tension eased slightly.
Caine’s experience reflects Brando’s reputation for being a challenging actor to work with. Known for his intense method acting and unpredictability, Brando often tested his directors and co-stars. Yet, his talent is undeniable, and he remains one of cinema’s most revered performers.
Other actors have also shared similar experiences. Marlon Brando reportedly intimidated everyone from James Dean to Al Pacino, who have spoken about Brando’s legendary presence and how he could dominate a set simply by being himself. Even seasoned performers often found themselves in awe of his intensity and charisma.
Caine’s story is a reminder of Brando’s lasting influence on Hollywood. Despite his difficult reputation, he was a master of his craft, and encountering him could leave even accomplished actors like Caine genuinely starstruck.
