Time Travel Is Back: ‘Back to the Future’ Is Coming Back to Theaters
Forty years after its original release, Back to the Future is still a cultural phenomenon. From theme park rides to a musical adaptation and even a real-life missing-guitar mystery, the movie continues to capture fans’ imaginations.
Now, starting October 31, audiences can experience Robert Zemeckis’ classic time-travel adventure on the big screen once again. This isn’t just any re-release, it’s coming in premium formats, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, D-Box, and IMAX.
Universal Pictures highlighted the significance of this event in a press release, saying, “This marks the first time Back to the Future will be presented on the world’s largest screens, offering fans the opportunity to experience the film’s scope and spectacle in the most immersive formats yet.” To celebrate, the studio even released a special 40th anniversary trailer.

The limited theatrical engagement starts October 31, and tickets are already available at local theaters. IMAX screenings are also being offered, with details available on Universal’s website.

For collectors and fans who want more than just the theater experience, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is rolling out special 40th anniversary releases starting October 14, ahead of October 21—better known as Back to the Future Day, the date famous from the second movie in the trilogy.
The most extravagant offering is the Back to the Future Trilogy 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Gift Set. This $150 set includes all three films in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats, along with a collectible Flux Capacitor SteelBook, an exclusive Gibson Mini Guitar replica, an OUTATIME metal license plate, a Back to the Future: A Visual History booklet, and various replica items from Universal’s archives.

For those who don’t want to spend quite that much, individual Steelbooks for each film are also available, as well as a set containing the full trilogy in 4K, Blu-ray, and digital formats. All of these releases are up for pre-order now, according to Universal Pictures.
With this theatrical re-release and special collector editions, Back to the Future fans have plenty to look forward to this fall, whether they want to relive the magic on the big screen or own a piece of the 40-year legacy.
